The break of dawn brought with it the sounds of morning in the big city. Sounds of trundling market carts came through the slightly open window; the noise of a thousand voices talking at once, a dog barking. Zara’s eyes flickered open and found Ezra’s shape beside her. She smiled, and then rolled out of bed.
Within ten minutes she was fully dressed in her usual attire and her cloak. She slipped quietly out of the room and downstairs to the main room of the tavern. There were no other patrons there; only the innkeeper himself. He nodded at Zara who nodded back as she slipped out of the building and onto the street.
It was cold out. Pulling her cloak tight around her she set off in search of another job. Everywhere she passed she heard whispers of ‘The Devil Twins’. Each time she smiled. Their name was spreading; and no one knew who they were. It was the perfect setup. She passed the alley where they had punished the cheating man the previous night, and his body still lay in the alley in a pool of vomit, piss and blood.
Zara kept walking. They had a number of contacts in the city who would often put them in contact with people who wanted jobs done. She arrived at the building soon enough. Her hooded cloak had a face mask incorporated to hide her identity from clients. Zara pulled the cloth over her face and jumped up, grabbing the window ledge above her. She climbed up and jumped up to the next window, and then she was on the roof. After a few quick steps across to the skylight; and a few seconds to pick the lock, she dropped down into the office below. It was a large office with lavish cabinets and tables along one wall; and filing cabinets along the other. A mahogany desk sat in the centre of the room, with a large, straight backed chair behind it. Zara moved across and sat in the chair; shrouded in the darkness of the room.
A short time later, the door opened and a tall skinny silhouette stepped in. The light flickered on and revealed Silus Splendid; his jewel encrusted rings glinting on four of his fingers. The man jumped when he saw Zara.
“You scared the shit out of me!” he said, clutching his chest. “Do you have to do that every time? Could you not knock like a normal person?”
“I’m not normal”.
“I love your voice; it’s so smooth and sexy” Silus said. “Now get out of my chair”.
“Why don’t you make me?” Zara smiled as Silus squirmed; they both knew he wouldn’t dare try. Instead he moved over to his liquor cabinet and poured himself a glass of scotch.
“To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“We are looking for another job; something challenging. Our work has become too easy”.
“Killing people, carrying out heists and larceny has become too easy?”
“Indeed it has. There is no fun to it anymore”. She stood out of the chair and gestured for him to take it again. He did so. Zara walked in a slow circle around the chair, trailing a finger along his shoulders as she did so. She sat down on his lap and wrapped her hands around his neck. “Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?” She asked.
“A-as it h-happens” he stammered, clearly trying to control himself, “I may know of someone with a job to your tastes”.
She wriggled a bit on his lap. “Oh really?”
“Have you ever heard of Warren Meriwether?” She stood off him and he leaned forward, placing his palms on the desk and taking a deep breath.
“I can find him”.
“He has a job that needs taking care of”.
“You told him about us?” Silus nodded. “And he knows we demand half up front, half on completion?” He nodded again. “And that we decide the price depending on the difficulty of the job?” He nodded once more. “Thanks sweetie”. She blew him a kiss and climbed up to the skylight. When she glanced back, Silus had his hand down his pants. She smiled, and disappeared off to find Ezra.
