Zara put on her most seductive smile as Silus engaged the butler in polite conversation. They were admitted to the hall, and the door was shut behind them. Once the locks had been resealed, they were led into a large dining room that also functioned as a library. The butler left them to seek out their host.
“This is the house of Warren Meriwether” Silus said, gulping before he spoke. “He is the last remaining blood heir of Dr Bartholomew Meriwether”.
“Blood heir?” Zara asked, moving around to look directly into the lawyer’s eyes. “Is there someone else?”
“There is a girl he grew rather fond of… he looked on her as his family. Molly I believe is her name”.
“And where is she?”
“She and Warren…. They don’t see eye to eye”.
“He kicked her out once his father died you mean”.
“You could say that yes”.
A man strode into the room, chest puffed out, arms swinging and a grin on his face. “Silus” he said, “My good man”. He stared at Zara, looking her up and down, ogling her body. “Who is this fine woman you have brought to my home?”
“Good evening Warren” Silus said. “This is Za” Zara pinched his arm. “Sarah” he corrected himself. “Sarah is my new mistress”. Zara flashed a smile at their host.
“Pleasure to meet you sir” she stepped quickly forward and shook his hand, curtseying just enough that he could see down the front of her bosom.
“The pleasure is all mine” he said. “You really are quite beautiful”
“Why thank you kind sir”.
He turned to Silus. “Perhaps you wouldn’t mind loaning me your mistress some time”. He moved forward and wrapped his arm around Silus’ shoulder, guiding him to the couches. “To what do I owe the pleasure of your company this evening?” he asked.
“It is in relation to the matter you requested I take care of” he said.
Warren glanced at Zara. “I would not like to discuss this in front of her” he said.
“Za-Sarah is okay” Silus said. “You know these woman types, anything they hear goes in one ear and out the other”.
“I’ll bet that’s not the only thing that goes in and out of her” Warren said, looking at her and biting his lip. He turned back to Silus. “What about the issue concerns you?”
“It’s just… the clients who I hired to… locate and follow Miss Hiddlestone…”
“They want more information”.
“What do you mean?”
“They are tracking her… but they would like to know why”.
“Why would they like to know why?” Warren asked.
“Because that’s how they operate” Silus said. “Could I trouble you for some scotch?” he asked.
“Help yourself” Warren gestured to the drinks cabinet. “Pour me one too; neat”. He stared forward.
“Can I tell them what we did?” Silus asked, as he came back carrying the two glasses.
“We didn’t do anything except get me what I’m entitled to”.
“Exactly” Silus said. “And once my people know that, they’ll provide their best services… and they won’t leave the city with what you’ve already paid them”.
“Fuckers” Warren said. Zara moved around from where she stood and sat down next to Warren, leaning up against him and resting her hand on his thigh.
“They do sound awful don’t they” she whispered, her mouth close to his ear.
“I don’t see why we have to tell them everything” Warren said. “We could find someone else to do the job who won’t ask questions”.
“They happen to be the best at what they do” Silus said. Zara shot a smile at him.
“Why thank you Si” Zara said. “We are aren’t we?” She turned back to Warren whose eyes had just widened. She pressed the blade of her small knife against the side of his neck.
“W-where did that come from?” he asked.
“That’s for me to know and you to have nightmares about”. She moved over so she was straddling him. “Now you are going to tell me everything”.
“Si” Zara said, not taking her eyes from Warren’s. “Tell Mr. Meriwether here what happens when people don’t do as I ask”.
“You will want to do as she says” Silus said. “It’s not pretty when she doesn’t get what she wants”.
Zara could feel him getting hard beneath her. “I’m going to ask you once more” she said. “What secret does Miss Hiddlestone potentially know? What did you do?”
