I snarl as Ellie disappears through the wall of the morgue, her panic lending her speed as she flees. I turn to the two Light Reapers standing beside her body, both with their eyes locked on my scythe. The girl looks defiant, but in both her and her companion I can see fear. They know they are no match for me. And so do I.
"Well." I hiss. "It seems you have deprived me of my trophy ... for now."
"What do you want with her Sable?" the girl - Melody I think her name is - glares at me.
I smile, shaking my head at her innocence. She still has no idea what my kind are like, she hasn't been in the job that long. I think she still has yet to work out that she is working against her own instincts. Pity, she would make a very fine Grim Reaper, if I do say so myself.
"What I want her for is not your concern. What you should be worried about is what I can do to you. I don't take kindly to people scaring my prey off." I adjust my grip on the scythe in my hands, scarcely feeling the weight of it in my hands. I give it an absent-minded twirl, the black metal hissing satisfyingly through the air. The weight of it no longer bothers me, it's practically a part of my arm now. These two novices clearly aren't as experienced, both looking more scared by the moment.
"G-Go away." Melody snaps, trying to sound brave. "J-just leave her al-lone, she's not your property."
"Oh but she is. I killed her for a reason you pathetic whelps. Now, get out of here before I have to hurt you and pray our paths don't cross again. If they do, I might not be so merciful."
They don't need telling twice. With a flash of white light they vanish, leaving me alone in the silent morgue. I sigh and turn to face the wall Ellie has fled through. I've never had my victims run away before, not once in all my years of work. Then again, none have ever escaped me either. She is young, scared, and has no idea where she is or what is happening. Tracking her down will not be difficult. Still, it could be an interesting challenge.
A smile tugs at the corners of my lips. "Very well Ellie." I say to her motionless corpse. "Two can play at this game."
