I was greeted by a fuming Gothel when I arrived home. The news of my little spat with the guard came to her ears before I was even done shopping.
"You should know better than insult the captain!" Gothel exclaimed while I put the fruit in the basket on the small table in the dining room.
"I didn't insult the captain. I insulted a guard and talked back to another. They were both much younger than Captain Harrow." I said as I began to pull out the meat.
"Didn't you hear?" Gothel said as she began to help me prepare the meat for storage. "Captain Harrow retired last week! That was Captain Felix you just talked back to." I felt my heart begin to race but I didn't let me fear show. This was going to be bad.
"Where is he from?" I asked turning to Gothel "He doesn't look like he's from around here."
"He's from Oasitania." Oasitania was the kingdom that resided across the Black Ocean. What was he doing here?
"You really need to learn to hold your tongue Asha." Gothel said putting a hand on my arm as I went to put the meat away.
"How could I let him be content with shoving that little girl out of his way? She could've gotten hurt mother!" I said turning back to her.
"You should've just stuck with catching the girl. They took Han because he back talked a guard. You could be next if you keep it up!" Gothel yelled at me which startled me. Gothel was usually the more quiet type. She hadn't yelled at me since I was little. I quickly put the meat in ice box before I dropped it.
"Wait.... They took Han?" I asked. My voice cracked as I spoke. Han was my best friend. We had done practically everything together until about last year when he became an apprentice to the town's blacksmith. I hadn't seen much of him since. Last time I saw him was last month.
"Yes! They took him! Now no one knows whether or not he's still alive or dead!" I began to feel numb but that quickly changed to anger.
“We really need to start standing up for ourselves! I can’t just sit around all day and watch the guards push strangers and our friends around! You haven’t seen it like I have.” I slammed my fist on the table. “I got out there every day and I watch the things that those guards do to the people. I don’t want to live like this for the rest of my life! If I get taken and killed by the guards then at least I’ll feel I’ve done something even if it didn’t solve our problem.” I said firmly before turning on my heel and running to my bedroom.
