"Get out of the way filthy vermin!" one of the guards shoved a young girl of about seven out of his way and in the direction a mud puddle. I was standing at the butcher stand getting some meat when it happened. Quickly I dropped the things in my arms and caught the girl before she hit the ground.
"You know," I shouted before I could stop myself "At least these 'filthy vermin' have better manners than you do." I put the girl down as the guard turned in my direction. I glared at him, looking him straight in the eye.
"What did you say to me?" he demanded taking a step toward me. Defiantly I didn't move.
"You heard what I said you insolant cow!" I spat in his face. Growling he wiped his face then slapped my cheek. I heard someone in the crowd that had gathered gasp.
"I am a member of the king's guard and will not be spoken to in that manner by a peasant!" he said. I raised my hand to punch his face but he caught it and drew a knife. He twisted my hand behind my back and stuck the knife to my throat. "I will teach you to keep your tounge." he whispered in my ear.
He made a move to do something, probably slit my throat, but was stopped by someone.
"Have you no patience?" a man said "It's not worth killing this girl." Groaning the guard turned back to me.
"You got lucky this time girl." he said before removing the knife from my throat. He walked away and I quickly picked up my things.
"I'm sorry about that." said the man who had stopped the guard. I looked to see who it was and saw that is was another guard but he was of a higher rank. He was most likely just stopping that guard from creating a mess he'd have to clean up.
"I'm sure you are." I said, bitterly. "I thank you sir and bid you good day."
"Why so hostile?" he asked. I looked at him, eyebrow raised.
"I might ask all of the guards the same thing." with that said I stalked off leaving him standing there.
