The four of them walked out of the alleyway, with Ena and Kai ahead of them and Daphne and Camden following them slowly. Ena was hugging her arms around her chest and shivering slightly though it was a rather hot day. Camden noticed that Ena and Kai were whispering to themselves, and he had the feeling that they were hiding something from him.
Before he could think about it any further, Daphne distracted him. Her usually happy warm voice was now disapproving as she said, “I don’t like this place.”
“Huh?” Camden looked at her, snapping out of his thoughts. She had stopped walking, looking down at her feet and then back up at Camden with her hands crossed across her chest like a grumpy little child.
“The ground. It’s so rough and it’s too…different.”
“Daphne, you’re barefoot!” Camden exclaimed, groaning to have been stupid enough not to realize it at the start. Kai and Ena turned around to see what the commotion was about. They were just at the end of the alleyway, about to step into the connecting road and blistering heat.
“What’s going on?” Kai asked in his authoritative voice.
“There’s no grass here.” Daphne pouted. “My feet aren’t used to walking on this kind of a surface.”
“Your feet?” Ena looked down at Daphne who was now squirming uncomfortably. “You’re not wearing any shoes!”
The expression that crossed Ena and Kai’s face was priceless when what Daphne had said started to make sense to them. Ena’s eyes widened as she slowly asked, “What do you mean you’re not used to walking…on ground?”
Camden decided to interfere in the matter before Daphne went on to say something even more ridiculous than she already had. “Let’s just get her some shoes please.” Before people out there start to think she’s crazy.
