Daphne nodded with a smile. In that second, the two came out into a clearing. Soil no longer soft as the particles grew coarse and sandy beneath their feet. Beyond this point, they could see the painted and expensively tiled rooftop of Camden’s house. The clearing opened up to the vast backyard and not far from there was the back porch of the house.
Squinting, Camden could make out what looked like a blurry image of Claira’s silhouette. Smiling at the thought of how his sister would react once she saw him again, he turned around to face Daphne but had not expected what he was about to see.
All signs of confidence had disappeared from her face, now replaced with an expression of fear and anxiety. She shook her head ‘no’ at Camden, gaze redirecting to the house to indicate what she meant.
“Daphne! You can’t back out on me now,” Camden groaned, realizing what she meant by her silent gesture.
