The squirrel took the sign as an acceptance and approached Daphne slowly, carrying what resembled a berry in his small paws. Daphne's eyes zoned in on the food, her mouth watering at the sight of the small fruit. The squirrel hopped onto her lap, holding out the berry as its brown orbs twinkled in the moonlight.
Daphne felt unsure but her hunger over-ruled her general manners as she reached out her hand and gently took the berry. Popping it into her month, she chewed on it slowly, the sweet juice releasing onto her tongue. Savoring the taste, she ate it as slowly as she could but soon was left wanting more.
"Could you get me more Mr. Squirrel?"
She petted him, her hand softly pressing against his fur as she smiled down at him. It was strange but not new to her as the squirrel gave her a small shake of the head and jumped off of her lap, scurrying away into the darkness.
As she waited, she brought her knees to her chest, trying to touch the soles of her feet as lightly as she could against the soil. It didn't feel as painful as it had before yet she felt sore, and didn't want to take her chances.
The squirrel popped back from around the corner, carrying a paw-ful of berries now. He dumped it on her lap and she gave herself to her appetite.
