"Don't let go, it'll float away" Mom said.

"Okay, Mama" I replied as she handed me the balloon.

What she didn't tell me was that I shouldn't hold it too tightly either. Out of the fear I had for losing it, I held the balloon as tightly as my little sausage arms could. This obviously resulted in the balloon popping between my toddler fingers. Mom jumped about a foot in the air and spun around.

"What did you do?!"

The harsh words from my mother, the loud noise, and the fact that I just destroyed what I was attempting to protect all combined into a fear stew that made me sob uncontrollably. My mother, realizing her mistake, soon came to my side to console me.

"I'm sorry honey. It was just a loud noise. Shhhh shhh shhh..."

Her voice sounded the way melting ice feels: cooling and refreshing. I soon gained a hold of myself as we headed back to the balloon stand.

The End
