Polaris bit his paintbrush, looking around town. Then he pointed to nothing in particular. “You’ve got to be careful what you draw around here. The priests are very particular about what images can be depicted. I offered to touch up a few paintings they had a couple months back. They wanted things to be just so; it was such a headache.”
Max didn’t respond; he was getting used to that. Still, the quiet made him wonder what was going on in his mind.
“So, what are you going to do, Max? I don’t mind staying with the others. It’ll make it harder for those other guys to capture me again. But what about you?”
Max’s attention, however, was on a boy walking up to them. He wore a black hoodie that nearly covered his eyeglasses. It was a suspicious look... then again, he had a nervous posture and his slow walk seemed to say that he wasn’t sure if he should be talking to them.
“What do you want?” Max asked gruffly.
“Hi, I’m looking for you,” he said, then seemed uncertain. “I think.”
“Who sent you?” Max asked, curling his hand into a fist.
“Hang on,” Polaris said as the boy paled. “I think he’s okay. I mean, he approached us out in the open.”
“Doesn’t mean anything.”
“Why’re you looking for us? If it’s about Picasso, he’s not for sale.”
“<Seriously not,>” the Smeargle added, making a face at him. Polaris tapped him in reprimand of being rude.
“No, I’ve been following my cards for some time now.” He clutched the deck as a kind of talisman. “I’ve been trying to find this boy and girl, and...” he trailed off, considering how to explain it. “Oh, um, I’m Hari.”
“Nice to meet you, Hari. I’m Polaris, and this is Max. About the girl you’re looking for... does she float a foot off the ground?”
“No...” he looked sincerely puzzled.
“Then...” he turned to his notebook and flipped through the last few pages. He found one of Saffy. “This her?”
“Yeah. Do you know her?”
“We just started traveling with them a day ago. I think she and Vermil went to the library. What’re you looking for them for?”
