Once I arrived in New York, I immediately pulled out my phone and dialed the number Cherise had given me.
He answered after one ring.
"What?" the man barked.
"I take it you're Daniel."
"Who wants to know?" he asked warily.
I sighed, not in the mood for games. "My name is Iria. I'm friends with Cherise. She gave me your number in hopes you would aid my investigation."
"Look, I don't help reporters. Go find out about the stupid sun thing elsewhere-"
"I'm not a reporter or a human for that matter. I'm a vampire and I want my life back in my city. I don't want to deal with you but in order to find out what happened, I have to. Now are you going to help me or not?" I growled. I wanted my quiet days back in my apartment. I was tired of hearing screams as humans drew their last breath. I was sick of the smell of death. I was afraid he was going to try to find me.
The other line was silent for a few moments. Then he rattled off an address to some place about 30 minutes from me.
"I'll be there soon," I promised, ending the call before Daniel could respond.
I hid my bike in an abandoned house a block from me. If it was gone when I got back, there would be hell to pay. I figured maybe finally feeding before I left wouldn't be such a bad idea.
I heard him before I saw him; stupid newborn vampires thought they were so stealthy. He wasn't alone either. Two others flanked him, lustful gleams in their eyes. They obviously thought I was human.
"Hmmmm....you look delicious," the first one growled. "Doesn't she boys?"
"Hell yes she does, Erik," the one to his left said, looking me up and down appreciatively. The third one just nodded.
I snorted. Did they think I was scared of them? Hardly. They were just taking up my time.
"Leave her alone!" a boy yelled from the doorway of an old run down building. He was human; I could hear his beat beating rapidly. Another man stood behind him with wide terrified eyes.
"Don't try to play hero kid. I can take care of myself."
But the three newborns went after the boy first. He grabbed a metal pole and slammed it into Erik's head, knocking him to the ground. He wasn't so quick with the other two. I yanked both of the vampires away before they could bite him, threw one aside and tore the head off of the other. I glared at the two humans.
"Get away from here! Now!" I yelled, bracing myself as Erik rammed into me to get to the beating hearts of the humans. "Three houses down, to the right, wait inside!" I felt like I had to protect these kids. Besides, if I had to, I would use them to feed. They didn't need to know that though.
The humans took off, the brave one hesitantly until I hissed at him, baring my fangs.
Then I faced Erik and his remaining companion. I cocked my head to the side. "Come and get me boys."
They lunged at the same time. I made quick work of them and used one of their shirts to wipe their blood off of me. Now, to find those humans and find Daniel.
