This is a part of an action sequence where two of the main characters come in contact after Thad searches for days for Cory. He's frantic and scared, and promised Asher that he would protect her. Cory doesn't want to go though, she wants to fight.
"You need to go! Get out!" Cory yelled. She looked across to where Thad was striding towards where she sat, crouched between two wall, gun held firmly in both hands aimed towards the distant sound of footsteps.
Thad crouched down next to her, their faces barely three inches apart. "I'm not leaving you," he said through clenched teeth. "I came to get you, and I'm not leaving without you with me." He stretched out his hands to grab her underneath her shoulders but in one swift movement Cory had her gun trained on his chest. Thad froze.
"Do you want to die?" Cory questioned him dryly. "Because that is exactly what is going to happen if you don't leave. Leave Thad. If they catch us-"
"There is no life for me without you! And even if there was, I wouldn't want to live it without you in my life someway or another. You mean everything to me." Thad sounded as if he was choking back his own sobs. Was he going to cry? Cory thought.
She couldn't believe what he was saying? After hearing what he and Thalia were talking about back at the camp; about him just watching me because it's like a job, that there is nothing else to occupy his time so he promised Asher to watch over me... Now this? A basic love confession? He was just saying that, he doesn't mean it.
"Just leave, Thad." Cory pleaded. She tried not to sound disappointed for her own sake because if she was then it would be a sign that she feels for Thad more than she should, and that she wants him to mean what he said.
Thad reached out his hand, gun still pressed to his chest, and reached for Cory's face, resting his calloused hand roughly on her cheek, rubbing his thumb over the smooth surface of her face. "I'm not leaving without you."
