Garden
After school we walked home together, before going to the apartments though we ran into a small corner shop to get supplies; aka cheap fizzy drinks, malteasers and lollipops. It was a fairly random assort, but to us it was normal.
When home we all went straight to our respective houses, to change. After dressing we we all met again in the hallway. I’d gone with a faded t-shirt and jeans combo, I had worn trainers to match. The hallway was painted white once upon a time, but by now the paint had started to grey and even then it faded. The floor was made of grey dull tiles, none were chipped, and if one was it was replaced quickly, there was no window or decoration. To most it would seem ugly and dull the thing is to me it was my childhood, it was where I grew up, and mine and the others playroom, when we were younger we'd all be on the landing playing from sunrise to sunset, often in the summer time while on holidays we'd rotate from house to house for dinner, the mothers never minded much, well except Aaron’s so his home was usually skipped. It was more familiar to me than my own living room.
After meeting we walked up the last flight of stairs in the building, it lead to the sky garden. The sky garden was the roof of the apartment building, however it was flat and turned into a mixture of garden and park. It was probably illegal, but with the help of the resident witches it was magically shielded from human eyes. It was currently empty except for a few kids playing near the fountain. The edges of the building were lined with cable mesh, it was a fence that was 10 feet-tall, it protected people from falling over the edge and dying. Most of the roof was taken up by grass, flowers and trees, but there were also small stone pathways through it, all leading to a large fountain in the centre. The fountain was in truth more of a small swimming pool, it was about 8 foot deep, and the size of a tennis court.
We sat on a bench that was at the edge of the fountain, well me Rissa and Leo did, Rine and Aaron hated the small benches and usually just sat in a tree, they said there was more room to move on them, but we all thought it was just a way to compete with each other on who gets the best branch.
It was nice to be here, it was the only place we could really talk, and not feel enclosed by walls. The air was clean and warm as we sat there even if it was November and In a large city, thanks to a little magic it wasn't a problem. the best things about magic were the little things I’ve always thought.
We sat and watched the kids playing, it fun to watch them, it reminded me of when we were young and did the same. They were currently swimming at the one side, two of them were struggling but we didn't worry, their friends were close to them. Another sat on the edge and refused to get in the water, Rissa upon seeing this immediately cracked a joke about Leo from when he was like that. And as usual he gave his normal excuse.
“like I can help it! I am part cat you know!” it was true, we all knew that, and anyone who saw him right now wouldn't argue, not with those little triangular ears twitching on top of his head, or with the thin tail swaying behind him. But still he'd refused all water based activities since we were kids, and even now its a push to get him in (quite literally a push, last time we kicked him in).
“the kitties afraid of the water?” shouted Aaron from the treetops. He'd changed into a baggy shirt with two giant rips in the back. The rips were for his wings, the bright white of them stood out against his tanned skin, he was resting against the tree trunk. I’ve never completely understood why but demons and angels have always had a rivalry going, especially with Aaron, we all know he loves us all, but we also know he's the first to tease Rine or Leo.
“shut up birdy boy!” shouted Leo in retort, it looked like a new fight was starting when Rine cut in.
“shut up the both of you, the girls are getting annoyed, and we all know what'll happen then.” that shut them up, the guys had never quite forgotten the incident 4 years ago... well what ever if it shut them up it was a good thing, even if it made me uncomfortable to think about it.
The two boys looked at Rine and then mumbled apologies. Rine has skipped a shirt altogether and was shirtless, his pale skin seemed to almost glow in the sunlight. On his head were two small horns, both were black and as I knew from experience very, very sharp.
Things seemed to calm down after this, we talked about our school work, well mostly complained, we carried on like that until the kids near us called to us.
“hay! Can you guys help us?” one called out, it was a girl, she was small and slender, her ears were pointed, she was called Mary and lived on the third floor.
“sure why not!” I called back, while standing. The others looked at me and I shrugged, it wasn't like I was heartless. I went up to them.
“so what's the job?” I asked when I was close to them.
“Jamie lost his watch while swimming, and none of us can swim very deep and the plants are in the way, so...?” said the girl who'd originally called me, she was obviously nervous about asking.
“sure, I can do that, where about did it get lost?” I said, as I took off my trainers. The girl pointed to a part of the fountain, honestly it was so big I wondered why we didn't call it a lake or even a pool the amount of people who swam in it.
I looked at the spot they'd indicated and walked by a few back steps, then after taking a deep breath I ran sprinted forward and dived into the water. It was cold. Very cold. I swam up to the point the watch was supposed to be and dove downwards. The water was fairly clear and was simple to see through however the weeds growing around me.
I dove deeper when I saw a sparkle to my left, I turned to see what it was, it was the watch. As if in slow motion I moved to grab it, I was so low my feet and touched the ground. With it safely in my hand I kicked upwards, however I only moved about an inch before I was stopped by a tug on my ankle. I looked down and saw the weeds wrapped around it.
I was trapped.
