ops you died.

We were in a small room with one window looking out to the city streets below.  The reporter gestured to two uncomfortable looking arm chairs with a small coffee table in between.

“So, Mike…Mr. West?” The reporter asked me.

“Mike” I said in a rather bored tone.  Who was this guy?  He looks like he just stepped out of an old detective movie.  The reporter put a tape recorder on the table.

“So, Mike, Tell me about the bus crash all those years ago.”  The reporters’ eyes lit up with excitement when I leaded forward and began to talk.

“It happened about 20 years ago, me and my friend Jimmy Brown got on the bus like every day, but today was the last day of school so everyone was happy and excited.”

‘Come on Jimbo, I see two seats at the back of the bus.’

Jimmy hated when I called him Jimbo, and I waited for the punch at the back of my head, but it never came.  I turned around to see Jimmy drooling over Skylar Fowl.  The name Fowl suited her just fine.  Cheerleading captain, most popular girl, and of course stuck-up self, absorbed airhead.  As I was dragging Jimmy to the back of the bus I saw Mr. Ackles looking rather grumpy.

“I thought I was because all the kids were jumping around and being loud…But who knows.” I said to the reporter.

He just nodded and looked like he wanted me to go on…So I did.

‘Sorry man’ Jimmy said not looking at me.  His ears turned pink when Skylars’ hip twitched when she walked to her seat.  I always wanted to be an air force pilot, so I knew all this stuff about plains and as soon as I started talking about fighter plains Jimmy came back to earth.

“There were 42 kids on that bus” I said sadly.

We were on our last stop and all the kids were shouting.  The grade 7 soon to be grad 8 all had red faces from laughing, the grade 8 soon to be grad 9 were laughing but also looking quite serious, the grade 9 were going into high school and all look like they were going to throw up but the popular people(A.K.A the friends of Skylar).

We were going over the bridge and the water underneath looked clear and cold.  Not unusual for Canada.

‘I can’t wait to go swimming in that river tomorrow.’ I told Jimmy.

‘Yeah, but its gonna be freezing’ Jimmy said pretending to shiver.

Then when we were in the middle of the bridge Mr. Ackles turned right sharply.  The bus flew of the bridge and into the water.  Everyone was screaming and yelling for help.  Some people were calling for help.  Some people were bleeding.  Jimmy was knocked out and on the floor.

“It all happened so fast.” I told the reporter.  “People were bleeding and throwing up.” “Then I saw Mr. Ackles laughing….He was laughing!  As you know by this time the bus was at the bottom of the river and the water was covering the bus….Mr. Ackles broke open the bus door and the water came pounding in.”  I stopped to take a breath.  I could feel my tears burn my eyes.

          ‘Jimmy!’ I yelled.

A small mumble came from the ground.  Jimmy was face up and his noise was broken and blood covered his face.  The water was up to my hips.  I grabbed Jimmy by his waist and tried to break the window closest to me.  Everyone was screaming and trying to get out.  I saw Skylar Fowl knocked out on her seat.   As I tried even harder to break the glass window I thought that even if Skylar is a snob…She has a life and dissevers to live it.  I finally broke the window…Which made more water come in…The plan was better in my head.  With Jimmy still clinging to my side I ran half swam to Skylar and picked her up too. I tried so hard to get all three of us out of the bus.  I looked around to see so many dead faces, some bloody and still screaming for help.  I felt extremely sad that I couldn’t save them too.  I used the seat beside me as something to push off from and I leaded through the window.  I swam my hardest kicking with all my might to reach the surface.  My lags started to freeze-up.

Then something grabbed the back of my t-shirt and pulled us to shore were ambulances, fire trucks, and cop cars awaited.  I was in surrounded by them all taking me, Jimmy and Skylar on to stretchers.  I kept asking if Jimmy and Skylar were ok but no one would answer me.  I passed out from the cold and I woke up in the hospital a week later.  They told me Jimmy would never walk again and skylark died of hypothermia.

“Jimmy and I were the only survivors….Though they never found that bus driver.”  The reporter just sat there looking at me.

“Is that it?” The reporter asked in a rude tone.

“Well, yes….Now I have to leave.” I told the reporter in the same tone.  I got up and stretched.  Those chairs were really uncomfortable.  When I left the reporter said

“Well then….The End.”
