The Desert {Part 4}

“What are you up to? You seem like your mind is busy thinking about something.” –Mrs.Shosy said while looking at Zezrom and cleaning the sweat falling from her forehead.

Zezrom turned to look at her. “Indeed. Was trying to think about this entire situation we’re in. Wondering who is the one behind this? Why take 30 people every 3 years and make them go through this? Why us? Do we have something in common? Or is it just selected at random? So many questions yet no answers at all.”

“Honey, does that brain of your ever stops working?” –Mrs.Shosy said with a smirk. “But yes, I understand completely. Just try not to stress about it too much. We’re going to make it.” –She said.

“Benston didn’t.”-Zezrom said.

“He sacrificed himself for us. Makes him a hero. He’ll be remembered. But we ain’t losing anyone else.” –She said.

“I sure hope so. We’re quite a big group. The probability of one of us joining Benston are… kind of high.” –Zezrom said.

“Gurl, you ain’t helping. Now, shush your mouth with all of that negativity and tell me a little bit about yourself. You seem like a very smart guy, but that’s all I know. After all, you just saved me from falling to my death. I’d like to know about my most recent hero.” –Mrs.Shosy said.

“Not negativity, just being realistic.” –Zezrom thought. But he decided not to say it out loud. “Well, before I was dragged into this mess I was a working in a secret undercover company. My job was to infiltrate into a place and find the bad guys. I’ve always been good at analyzing people and tell if they’re lying or not.” –Zezrom said.

“Oh damn. So you’re like a cop!” –Mrs.Shosy said.

“Not a cop. Maybe like a secret agent if you’d like to call it that way. My telekinesis helped me a lot. It helped me comprehend human’s mind and way of thinking much better.” –He said.

“And how exactly you became a… secret agent?” –She asked.

“Throughout my whole high school life I was continuously getting A+. I was the only student in my town to get a perfect score in almost every single test I took. Right after I graduated and right before I was going to start college, I received a call from this guy. He basically told me how there’s a secret company recruiting people with high intellectual capacities to help them bring justice to our planet. I was immediately captivated by the idea. We met that same day and the day after I officially started working with them.” –Zezrom said.

“Sounds like you enjoyed your job.” –Mrs.Shosy said.

“At first I did. But then my life changed.” –Zezrom said. His voice changing to a sadder tone.

“Changed? What happened?”-Mrs.Shosy asked.

“When I turned 20 I met this lovely lady that worked in the same company as me. Her name was Dania. She was the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. We began hanging out, which later on lead to dating and eventually we became a couple. We always worked on cases together. We always caught the bad guy. We were a hell of a team. When I turned 24 I proposed to her. And we got married that same year. We got a lovely daughter.”

“Oh! Didn’t know you were a family guy. That’s so sweet.” –Mrs.Shosy said.

“Yeah, well, when I turned 26 my wife and I were assigned to this dangerous case. He was one of the smartest and deadliest criminals out there. Dania and I loved challenges, so we took it. We located his house days later. He lived in this rural place surrounded by trees. It was a small wooden cabin. We approached the cabin. No movement was seen inside. Quietly, we opened one of the windows from the back and we got in. We looked everywhere in the cabin, but no one was there. I decided to run outside real quick just to make sure he didn’t escaped right after we got in. I scanned the surroundings once again. And then it happened…” –Zezrom said.

He paused for a second.

“An explosion. The cabin erupted in a million pieces. With Dania inside… My Dania…” –Zezrom said with tears falling down his eyes.

Mrs.Shosy approached Zezrom, placing her hand on his shoulder. “I’m so so sorry, Zezrom. I had no idea.” –She said.

Zezrom quickly cleaned his tears with his arm. “That criminal outsmarted us. It was my first failure. And I lost my wife. From that day on I retired as a secret agent. I had a daughter to take care of. And I wasn’t going to risk my life or hers by staying in that job. And it kills me to think that she’s all alone right now. With no dad to protect her.” –He said.

“Zezrom, I’m sure your daughter will be fine. And as soon as we get out of here, you’ll be reunited with her once again.” –Mrs.Shosy said.

“That’s why I’m continuously thinking about all these questions. I’m analyzing all of this. I can’t make another mistake. I can’t afford another failure…” –Zezrom said.
