I struggled against the three men holding me. I shoved my heal into one man's shin, he cried out and let go of me. With a loud CRACK! I slammed my head into the man's head behind me, he let go as well as he was completely stunned. The last man was lucky, I just wrenched my arm out of his grip and ran as fast as I could away from them. I heard a gunshot and ducked, a dart went whizzing over my head, a near miss. I turned a sharp corner as I heard another gunshot echo off the close walls of the abandoned buildings of this district.
Why are they chasing me? I thought to myself, I was proclaimed dead five years ago! It's not like I've done anything wrong recently! I even had a job...kinda. If running messages across The Bronx for about 25 cents a letter could be called a job. I heard the sounds of pursuit behind me, Crap! they're gaining on me! I turned three more corners in rapid succession and then stopped and waited. Somehow they knew which corners to take and followed me all the way. When I saw the first man's ugly head I jumped on him, tackling him to the ground, hitting him in the face to knock him out, and then I got up and ran again.
I got all the way to an abandoned apartment building and stopped at the door. It had been a cream color once...most of the paint had peeled off though, exposing the deep red of the clay bricks. I moved in through a big, empty door-frame and into a deserted hallway that was covered with litter and smelled like urine. Quietly, I moved down the hall to room 12, opened the beat-up door, and went inside. This was where I lived. I sat down on a decrepit couch and let out a huge sigh. That had been clo--the thought never finished. A dart hit me in the neck, knocking me out almost immediately.
I woke up with my wrists shackled to a cage...all around me there were people in dog crates...I wasn't in one though...probably because I was just over six feet tall and so I really wouldn't fit in one...I started immediately to pull on the chains trying to break them, all I accomplished was drawing attention to myself and cutting my wrists. A thin trail of blood ran down my arm as I started to turn red...I really didn't like being the center of attention.
The door in front of me clattered open and I watched as one of the men who had attacked me earlier walked in and grabbed my cage. He was about to lift it when he stopped, pulled out a gun, and shot me in the neck, again. Blackness encompassed me and I let it come; knowing that there was nothing I could do to stop it.
I woke up again, this time I was chained to a table. I looked slowly around, I was in a room with two other girls, they were both also chained to tables, of their own...I didn't bother trying to break the chains this time...it would just draw attention.
"You're awake!" said the girl next to me. I turned my head over to her, her clothes were in the same condition as mine...she must have been taken off the street like me! I saw a couple small electrical burns on her skin and winced, those couldn't have been comfortable.
"Yeah, I'm awake," I winced, I had a huge headache from being put to sleep so many times.
"What's your name?" she asked.
"I'm Connor, you?" I replied.
"Valencia," she smiled, "do you have any idea what they are going to do with us?"
I shook my head and winced at the pain it caused, "Sorry," I said. Then I looked over at the other girl, her clothes were simple enough, but they looked like they were made from more expensive materials...rich kid...wonder what she was doing here?
I sighed and tried half-heartedly to pull at my chains. Amazingly it gave a little, I gasped in wonder.
"What?" Valencia asked.
I ignored her and puled as hard as I could against the chain, it came free with a snap. I quickly free my other hands and legs, then went and freed Valencia's too. Whoever put us here was in for some fun when they got back...
