Chapter 17

I was reasonably happy with how my Year 11 mocks went. English of course was what I was strongest in but I thought I'd done reasonably well in the other subjects too. Hopefully Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics I had not done too badly in, though as these were only mocks there was no cause for emergency. One break Jack introduced me and Selby to his girlfriend Emma. He had met her during the summer. She was tall with black curls and black eyes, and, according to Jack she owned two dogs; a labrador and a dalmatian. Selby appeared to be having a fantastic time running the shop in Energizer and occasionally helping Jack stream jazz music.

I asked Kamilla to come to the Year 11 Dinner Dance with me and she willingly consented. I had quite enjoyed practising my dancing in the assembly hall during one of my tutorial periods (the other one being devoted to my mentoring) .  I reckoned it was a good idea to have two tutorial periods. The Monday morning one was mandatory and usually encompassed form time. The Friday morning one was optional; you could make an appointment with your form tutor or a subject teacher for a one to one tutorial or use it as a study period. That was the only study period that Year 11s had. In Ravenswan, you didn't start getting free periods until sixth form, though you still got study leave before your actual GCSE and A level exams.

There was a grand Christmas tree in the hall on December 12th. I arrived in my black and white tux and escorted Kamilla in on my arm. I saw Jack and Selby do the same with Emma and Mel respectively. Kamilla looked breathtakingly beautiful. She had let her hair down and was wearing a purple-blue ballgown and a silver necklace to go with it. The moment I had seen her I had walked towards her with my hand outsrtretched saying "Kamilla - you look like an angel". Selby had laughed, saying I sounded like Peter Parker from Spectacular Spiderman, but I hadn't minded. I loved Kamilla. After the dinner had been eaten, everyone lined up with their partners and went from the canteen into the assembly hall which adjoined it.

We started off with one of the slow dances. Only friendship dances had been chosen to avoid embarassment. Besides, you might not necesarily be dating who you danced with, which was certainly the case with Selby and Mel. The music started, and then the most beautiful voice rang out, making me blush slightly. I apologised but Kamilla merely giggled, saying that she'd liked one or two male celebrities over the years so how could she blame me for having a tiny crush on a famous singer's voice? The song commenced;

When love calls your name,

And whispers,

You're the one,

When all you've ever dreamed,

Dances like stars around your heart,

And finally I hold the chance,

To give you all my love,

So what's keeping me away from holding you?

I'm ready to believe,

Be strong enough,

Give everything I am,

And trust in love,

My arms long to reach for you,

The way I feel I wish you knew,

I'm ready now, I'm ready to believe,

I'm ready for love,

Only once will you find,

A love that is so true,

And the way I think of you,

You can't imagine how beautiful it feels,

I must find a way to free,

The secret I hold near,

It's these words you need to hear,

I'm ready to believe,

Be strong enough,

Give everything I am,

And trust in love,

My arms long to reach for you,

The way I feel I wish you knew,

I'm ready now, I'm ready to believe,

I know with you, I could stay forever,

Sailing into grace,

Here all things are possible,

There's no time or space,

When I feel you near,

I'm ready to believe,

Be strong enough,

Give everything I am,

And trust in love,

My arms long to reach for you,

The way I feel I wish you knew,

I'm ready now, I'm ready to believe.

The captivating voice faded and the song stopped. Kamilla nudged me. It was now time for the next dance. I numbly followed my girlfriend as the pairs moved further up the line.

"Who's singing it?" I asked.

"Kelly Sweet"

"She's a brilliant singer".

I gazed, distracted into Kamila's eyes. "You and me have never danced before, and not to a love song either"

"No" she said slowly.

I automatically moved forward and reached for her face.

"Not here" she whispered, laughing.

I drew back at once, and concentrated on getting into the right position for the dance, blushing.

The music started again, and once more Kelly Sweet's voice rang out, this time singing a different song;

Didn't need to ask,

Don't know the reason,

Everything that I believe,

Is right here,

Not thinkin' 'bout tomorrow,

Couldn't catch it if I tried,

World is spinning too fast,

So I'll wait till it comes to me,

I am you,

You are me,

We are one,

Take me in your arms,

And flow through me,

I'll flow through you,

Steal my breath away,

'Cause I'm so moved by you,

Deeper than I ever thought,

Was possible,

Was possible,

It's everything, oh,

The difference between me and you,

It's all in where your heart lies,

And every day's another chance,

So let's get it right,

I am you,

You are me,

We are one,

Take me in your arms,

And flow through me,

I'll flow through you,

Did you lose yourself out there?

Did you lose faith and give up?

Don't turn away and hide yourself,

'Cause there's no friend to make along the way,

We are the heartbeat and our souls speak,

And all the beauty I have ever dreamed,

Is right here in front of me, oh,

Is right here in front of me, oh,

I am you,

And you are me,

We are one,

Take me in your arms,

And flow through me,

I'll flow through you.

"I love you Kamilla" I gasped as the song drew to a close and the music faded.

"I love you too Mark". I was surprised to hear a similar intensity in her voice. Maybe the song had evoked her feelings for me too.

Not caring about the people around us, I drew Kamilla into my arms and kissed her. She kissed back with equal passion.

The End
