My Mother

“I hate to tell you this,” Mom said, taking a drag on her cigarette. “But I have some Cancer.”

Chandra nodded; she was expecting it. She eyed the cigarette in her mother’s mouth, watching the smoke curl out of it, floating up into her sinuses and making her eyes water. “Uh huh,” she said with a shrug. “Good luck.”

Her mom nodded back, blowing out a smoke ring. “Will you miss me?”

Chandra looked up, glaring her mom in the eyes. “I sure won’t miss that,” she snapped, yanking the cigarette out of her lips and crushing it into the ground with her heel. “And I won’t miss this version of you.” Silent tears streaked down her cheeks as she shakily replied, “But I will miss my mom.”

The End
