4: CaughtMature

The password is "Parseltongue," Mitchie announced, as the portrait swung open to reveal a hidden room. We were far down in the dungeons, and it was cold and murky. It might be spooky if you were by yourself later in the night, but here with Rafe and his sister by my side, I found it pretty cool.

"Luckily, she's a prefect, so her duties will give us a break from her a lot of the time," Rafe whisper-laughed in my ear as Mitchie sauntered off to break up a couple making out on the couch.

I nodded my head. That would be nice, actually. As much as I did like his littler sister, it would be fun to get to know just Rafe better. He was a guy, and he was my age. Plus, he was incredibly cute, something I couldn't help but notice the more I looked at him.

"So what are we supposed to do tonight?" I asked.

He didn't respond, so I looked over at him. His face was red and he was biting his lip, looking like he was trying not to laugh. What is he . . . Oh!

"That didn't come out right," I laughed. "I meant what do people do for fun at night here, you pervert! Does everything always have to be some sort of sexual innuendo with men?"

"Oh, come on. Once you spend enough time at this school, you'll see I'm not a pig! That was actually very mild. And anyways, about what we do for fun. Well, different people do different things. As for me . . . sneaking out is my specialty."

I followed what Rafe had told me to do earlier and snuck out of my dorm, into the Slytherin common room and up the passageway to the left that was supposed to lead to his dorm. I found the fourth door on the right like he said, and I pushed it open, not bothering to knock.

As I opened my mouth to call for him, a hand clamped over my lips. The next thing I saw was Rafe's face in front of mine, holding a finger up to his lips, indicating that I should be quiet. I looked around the room and noticed that his roommates - three messy flops of hair sticking out from under the covers atop their pillows - were sleeping. I nodded my head in understanding and had removed his hand.

Rafe ushered me out of the room, closing the door behind him. We made our way back down to the empty common room. It was well past curfew by now, and everyone wanted a good night's sleep before the first day of classes. Everyone, except the two of us, apparently.

"So, where are we gonna go?" I asked just before he placed something on my head. I turned to see him holding a hat, and then place it on his own head. He disappeared from sight before my eyes, and I couldn't help but let out a gasp of surprise.

"Invisibility Hats," he explained. "Bought them over the summer from the Weasley brothers joke shop in Diagon Alley, you know?"

I just shrugged, and we continued walking. I completely forgot the fact that he couldn't see my shrug. I was unphased by the time I realized it, however.

"Oh, right; back to where we're going to go," he whispered. We were in the great hall, heading for the main entrance to Hogwarts. I didn't think that was the most inconspicuous way to sneak out.

"Yeah?" I questioned.

"Well, I figured we'd go for a walk around the school, show you the Black Lake, the edge of the Forbidden Forest, Professor Hagrid and Madame Maxime's hut, and the Herbology greenhouses," Rafe explained.

When we reached the main doors, he took my elbow (how he found it while I was invisible, I'll never know) and guided me to the left of the entrance. We walked a few feet or so before running into a bookcase. He searched around on the bottom shelf for a moment before finding a purple book with silver writing, and pulling it down like a lever.

He pulled me closer to the bookcase as it revolved, and soon we were in another room. Well, I don't know if you could call it a room actually. It was more of a muddy hole.

"Are you sure we're in the right place?" I asked uncertainly.

"You bet," he said, and I could practically hear the grin in his voice. Then, he reached up and took his hat off, and I did the same. He took his wand out of his pocket and pointed it upwards.

"Alohamora," he mumbled. Then, wrapping one arm securely around my waist with a quick whisper of "You don't mind, right?" and then pointed his wand in the same direction again.

This time, he said "Ascendio." and we were blasted through a grassy trap door that was just outside the castle. We were only a few feet away from the entrance, and I wondered if anybody else knew about this, and how Rafe found out about it.

He relocked the trap door and held out his hand for my hat. I gave it to him and he shrunk them to the size of silver sickles before placing them in his pocket. Wow, this was one . . . resourceful wizard, if I do say so myself.

"Wow," I said impressed.

"I know, Sid . . . I'm pretty amazing," he teased. "Let's go visit Hagrid and Maxime first, okay? They've always got a plate of rock cakes waiting for me."

So we wandered side-by-side down the lawn towards a tiny little hut. I wondered how two people could actually live there together. Through a small square, which I assumed was a window from this distance, a dull yellow light flickered through and I guessed they had a fire going. That was nice, I suppose. It was only the beginning of September, but the wind was kind of crisp.

We walked in silence, and every few moments, Rafe's fingers would brush against mine . . . by accident, of course. I didn't mind though. Everything was just so peaceful. It was nice to just enjoy the quiet and take in all my surroundings.

"Hey, you two!" a deep, stern voice called. "What are you doing out here?"

I turned on my heels, not daring to breathe, to face my soon-to-be punisher. Great, I hadn't even been here one full night yet and I was already probably going to get expelled for sneaking out!

Rafe addressed the man before I even recognized him. "I'm so sorry Professor Malfoy, sir. It's just that it's Sid's first night here and I wanted to show her around outside before her first day of classes so that she wouldn't get lost tomorrow, and we were -"

"Just on your way to visit the Care of Magical Creatures professors?" Mr. Malfoy asked. I sighed in relief that it was him. At least he was nice (not to mention incredibly gorgeous) so whatever punishment he had for me couldn't be too terrible, right?

"Well . . . " Rafe admitted, at a loss for words.

"You may go back to your dormitory, young man," Mr. Malfoy dismissed. I started to follow Rafe when I was called back. "But as for you, I would like to point out some of the rules here at Hogwarts since - as your friend so kindly pointed out - you're new here. I would have waited until tomorrow but it seems now is as good a time as any, don't you agree Miss Greene?"

I gave a reassuring smile to Rafe and he trotted on back up to the castle. I thought it was kind of funny that Mr. Malfoy wasn't worrying about how he would get in, considering all the doors were locked, and we'd come through a secret passageway.

"You've barely been here a few hours and you've already -"

"Gotten myself into trouble, I know," I finished for Mr. Malfoy.

He laughed, and I marveled at his whiter than white smile. How did someone acquire such perfect teeth?

"Actually I was going to say, that you've already found yourself a boyfriend," he grinned and I knew he was playing around with me.

However, I still felt the need to correct him. "Rafe and I are just friends. What he told you was actually pretty much the truth."

"Well, I hope you didn't get to far around the grounds, because I was actually wanting to show you around. As the Head of your House and everything, I figured it was my job," Mr. Malfoy said. I was more than a little surprised.

"O-Okay," I stuttered dumbly. Could you really blame me for going weak at the knees around him.

"I think it best we not bother those two though," he pointed toward the hut. "Hagrid told me he had a very special midnight surprise planned for he and his wifey tonight."

I shivered. "I know what you mean," he said. "Gives me the heeby-jeebies, too."

"So . . . shall we?" I asked, looking up at him.

He smiled and nodded, heading towards the opposite direction. I saw something vast and dark in the distance. Maybe it was the . . . lake?

Something occurred to me, then. If Mr. Malfoy wasn't actually mad at us, then why did he send Rafe back to the castle?

The End
