12 am:

It’s almost Mother’s Day. In 15 minutes to be exact. I still don’t know what I will do for mom. I’ll figure it out later.

May 11, 1953:

11 am

Today is Mother’s Day! I’ve decided that I’m going to give mom a huge surprise.  I’m still not sure what though, I was up all night, well morning. I think we might go out. I’ll have to check the weather. No clouds, no rain, sunny. Perfect! Right before I could put my phone down my brother ran into my room. I was about to scream, but didn’t because I didn’t want to ruin Mother’s day. Caleb! I said. “Sorry Grace, but Dylan want me to come over,” said Caleb. I told him that it was mother’s day, but he didn’t care, and decided to go. I am 16 so I know how he feels.

I decided to let mom sleep in, I mean it is her day. I walked into the kitchen as quiet as I could, to find that dad was already up. He was making a huge breakfast. I had completely forgot it was Mother’s Day and grabbed a plate. But dad said no that we had to wait for mom. I sat down and ate some cereal, and we talked about what we could do for mom that day.

About 30 minutes later mom got up. She seemed really happy, but her hair wasn’t. I let out a little chuckle, then she gave me an immediate stink eye. I mean who could blame me, it looked like she let a hornets nest grow in there. At first she didn’t notice the big breakfast, but when she did her eyes went real big. We ate that breakfast until we couldn’t look at it anymore. I started telling mom about all the fun we could have, but she said that she just wanted to watch tv right now, and that we can have fun later.

Mom sat on the couch and Darby came and gave her a huge Mother’s Day lick. Darby is our dog. She is our family. Mom let out a chuckle. About an hour later we were all dressed for the day.  I knew today would be a great day!

12 pm:

Boom! I heard as we walked outside It was our neighbor Dan helping his boy learn to shoot a gun. We all got in the car and drove to town, when mom realized that Caleb wasn’t with us. I told her where he went. She was just happy to have a little of freedom, because all he does is ask for things, and I know mom didn’t want that especially on Mother’s Day. We walked around town and bought some things. When dad said he would meet up with us. I knew exactly what he was doing. He had planned on buying her this beautiful necklace. Mom and I went to this coffee shop, Chris's Cafe, she loves, and the best part was they were giving free donuts and coffee to all the Mother’s.

1:30 pm:

We were leaving the shop when we saw clouds forming. They were some really dark clouds. That’s when it started raining. Great, another Mother’s Day ruined! We stayed in till the rain stopped. Mom was getting worried so she tried to call dad, but there was no signal. She was about to search everywhere, but then he walked in. He asked if we were okay, which we were. Mom was relieved to see him.  We decided to head home. Once we got to the car, there were more clouds, but even worse this time. They were swirling in a circle getting darker and darker. We all looked at each other and knew what was happening. I didn’t understand it. The weather app said it was supposed to be a great day, but nature had a whole other story.

2:45 pm:
Swoosh! Swoosh! We heard as the winds started picking up. We all rushed inside. There was screaming and crying from everywhere. I thought this was the end. Dad must’ve known what I was thinking because he said everything would be alright. I knew it wouldn’t.

3:00 pm:
There was a huge crash, at this point trees were everywhere, and houses were being ripped from the foundation. I had learned about this in science. That this was a F5 tornado, the most deadly. I really knew that this was going to be a bad day. Then the ground started rattling, the tornado was right outside. The tornado hit everything. Everything was destroyed. Then it hit us. We were all  screaming. Dad reached to mom and handed her the necklace, then he was hit. I screamed. Then  I was flown through the air. I hit my head where a building had been ripped up. I was so scared. I forced myself to get up, even if i was in a lot of pain. I managed my way to the Cafe, which was ripped to pieces. Then something hit me, almost like a bullet. I was in so much pain I didn’t even realize the tornado was gone. I rushed through all the torn pieces remaining of the building. I knew I wouldn’t like what I would find. There wasn’t much left. Everything was torn to pieces. That’s when I found mom, she was laying on the ground with a pole launched in her side. The necklace in her hand. She was gone. I cried and screamed. When I went to find dad he was gone too. I didn’t understand it. Why my family. Then I remembered Caleb. I knew where Dylan lived so I rushed over there. But there was no house. I thought I was in the wrong place, until I looked in the pasture to see a house, and 4 bodies. I just wanted to go home, so I rushed to what was left of my house. All my stuff, friends family, gone.I was all alone.  I rushed to my safe place which was in the woods in a little cabin I had found a few years back.  As I approached the cabin i heard a whimper, when Darby ran up to me. I was so happy to see her. As we rushed inside, I just sat there with her. That cabin has always been my place, a place I go when I didn’t feel safe, but this time I was the one who was safe.

The End
