Internships of various lengthsMature

When we got off of the flight, we were quiet. We had spoken only a handful of words after the dilemma on the plane, and I hated the arkwardness. I tried and tried to break the tension with some light hearted banter, but Kevin just wouldn't bite.

We grabbed our bags the second they appeared on the conveyer belt, and headed through the arrivals security, and then out to get a taxi. We got one after about five minutes, and collapsed into it. After Kev told the cab driver where we were going, I grabbed his arm.

"Listen, Kevin. This is not going to ruin this. It can't. Ok, you said we'd decide what we'd decide. No worrying now! We can't-" I jabbered, my voice raising a pitch.

"Shshh.. everything's fine... we'll be fine. I told you I wouldn't be parted, didn't I? I did mean, that I wouldn't be parted from you." He smiled, and I saw a faint trace of his cheeky grin.

I tried to relax, but I couldn't. Either way, one of us was going to sacrafice an oppurtunity. And that was painful...

"Hello, Can we speak to a Ms. Rosalie-"
"Speaking, " I could barely contain my excitement and apprehension, and felt a little nauseaus.

"Hello, Rosalie. It's Johanna, from the New York office."
"Hello, Johanna, how are you?"
"Oh good...good. I am ringing, as I'm sure you've guessed, about the internship." She paused, making my insides scream with anticipation. " You've not been selected for the year long internship, I'm so sorry,"

I could hear Kevin whispering, tersely, desperately wondering to know what was going to happen to our lives. He stopped suddenly when he read the dissapointment on my face.

"That's...That's... okay," I said quietly, shooing Kevin away.

"But... we would like to offer you, a three month internship instead. I know it's not as long as you'd like..."

"May I call you back, Johanna? I must think this through. But thank you, so much, for offering me the internship!" I heard her laugh down the line.

"That's ok, just ring me as soon as. I need to know pretty soon,"

"Ok, thanks Johanna," I heard her phone click as she put it down. As I did the same, I turned to face Kevin.

The End
