Chapter FiveMature

A week had come and gone, and the days before my birthday and my ascension were dwindling. I needed to speak with Lucas soon. With Syon having called Cal to my fathers office for something, I figured this would be the best time for me to sneak out. Only there would I be able to piece together what we were going to do, and only then would I find out just who Hayden really is.
The lights of Pan's place were out when I arrived. So I went around back. Inside, I was met by the same group of people who were here only a week ago, except for a the select new faces. One in particular being Hayden. Sitting at the back of the room, his blue eyes connected instatly with mine, the second I stepped in. Even after all this time, I can never understand how being this close made me all fuzzy inside. It must me the curse part of it all coming out., I thought. He smiled, his teeth perfectly white just as my foot caught on a step. "M'Lady?" Lucas said concerned, as he helped me back up. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, thank you." I said embarrassed, and a little irritated at myself." Glancing over to Hayden, he was now standing a few feet away. His face strong and aware all at the same time.
"What are you doing out of your room?" Hayden asked. His voice sounding exactly as I had imagined it would sound. "How are we ever going to defeat them, if they kill you for gettibg caught?"
Staring up at him, I was caught off guard with his tone. He was wearing a thin line of being concerned and just plain rude.
"I have my ways." I snapped, surprised I had been able to form any words at all. Let alone, make them sound so asertive.
"Well you shouldnt be here," he paused. Looking around, everyone else had taken a seat around the table, and was watching us.
Lucas stood up. "Hayden watch yourself, she is just as much a part of this as you are, if not more. Remember, you are only here because she asked for you to come."
I folded my cloak, before setting it down. I could hear Hayden taking in a deep breath. When I looked up at him, he was back in his chair, his muscles tense under the candle light. "What if she were to get hurt somehow?" He asked calmly.
Lucas opened his mouth to answer but, by then I was already forming my own. "Than let that be my problem to deal with, not yours." I said and took a seat as well. My chair the farthest one from his.
Hayden rolled his eyes as if I were a child, and sat back in his seat. His face now hidden within the dark spaces the candle's light couldnt reach.
"I've decided we should wait until your birthday, to attack." Lucas said completely changing the subject. "He doesnt know about Hayden, we tested that the other night at the ball. He knew nothing of his name. And truthfully we dont know what all he really even knows about you. It will come as a surprise when we attack, and with your new powers they will be defenseless."
Like before, discussions began amongst the group. I stayed silent, my focus on Lucas.
"Thats a good plan but, it wont work." Hayden called out from the other side of the room. His perfectly white smile, showing again.
"And why not?" I asked, ready for another chance to defend myself.
"Because your highness," he said, his voice teasing me. " it will take some time for you to truly adjust to your new powers. If they are anything like mine, at least."
I looked back at Lucas who was holding his chin with his hand. You could see he was in a deep train of thought. I wonder which one he got, I thought to myself. I wondered which was that left me. "Your birthday is less than a week, the wedding almost a month." Lucas continued aloud. "Hayden do you think she could be ready by then?"
"With me, Of course." He said in a way I wanted to smack the cockiness right out of him.
"I'll be fine without him." I smiled back, only hoping to come off only half as annoying as he was. But he just smiled.
"You cant even imagine what it's like." he said. Just then a rush of cold air, made goosebumps race up my back. I shook and reached for my cloak.
Lucas shut the window behind me. "We believe you, M'Lady." He said, and went to light the fire beside me. "Your our only hope."
The group went quiet after that. All of them watching me even as I went to leave. I was really starting to hate being stared at. "Before I go," I said, turning back around to face them. Hayden no where to be found. "If not Hayden, then who is the man you tricked Syon into protecting me?"
"His name is Gabe." Lucas smiled. "He was a doctor so to speak for the Night Walkers. When we found Hayden, he asked to join us." there was a pause. "Syon's men killed his family in a raid much like the one in Hayden's village. He is here to help us stop him from doing it to anyone else."
I nodded, and turned around. My fingers hovering over the door handle, my mind somewhere else. I wasnt ready to leave. I wasnt ready to go back to Cal or the castle where I am constantly watched. There was a pressure on my back, I turned. Hayden was behind me.
"And you," I asked softly, not sure I could trust myself this close to him. My body was aching, my heart racing. I was speaking before I even knew I had something to ask.
"What about me?" he asked. Again he smiled, and I watched as his chest rose and fell with his breath. It was then that he seemed to notice just how close we were, and stepped back. His eyes falling to the ground. Everyone behind us watching intently.
"What is in this for you?" I asked. "Embress wasnt your home, why do you care about what happens to it or anything involving the Legacy?"
I watched him shift in his stance, his muscles flexing as if I had struck a nerve. He looked up at me, his icy blue eyes so intense I felt like I could explode. "Syon killed my fiance." he said. His words ringing in my ears like daggers. I stumbled back. Never in any of the stories had a Legacy born been able to love another. At least it had never been mentioned before now. "He will pay for what he has done."
Lucas, now standing beside Gisselle, took her hand in his. Gisselle herself stared up at me, a look of guilt on her face. "How is that even possible?" I asked. Hayden taking a couple more steps back, and then sat down. Even I could hear how pathetic I sounded.
Outside, the wind beat viscously against the window. I swallowed hard and opened the door. Standing at the door was Gabe, probably off from his shift. "What are you doing here?" He asked. His face struck with a complicated look.
"I was just leaving." I smiled up at him. Like before at the Ball, everything I was feeling had vanished from thought. I wondered what type of doctor he really was. None that I have met have been able to make me forget everything so easily, the way Gabe had done at the Ball. I touched his shoulder, and then tied the hood of my cloak. "Thank you," I said, and left.
Quickly I made my way back to the castle wall where I had broken off a piece of the rod iron drain leading into the castle garden. Once inside, I would be fine even if caught. As long as I stayed inside the walls Syon had said I could roam. The tricky part would be explaining how I had escaped my room after Cal had it locked.
"What are you doing?" I heard a voice call out behind me. By now I had slipped halfway through the hole. I cursed softly and crawled back out.
Looking back, it was a guard. Instantly he recognized me, and before I knew it I was on my feet and in his grip. "Just wait until Cal hears about this." he smiled, pulling me toward the castle doors. I was helpless in my attempt to fight him.
But, before I could scream for help, I was back lying on the ground. My head hitting the rough dirt hard. When I looked up, the guard was on top of me unconscious.  What was happening, I wondered. Moments later Hayden was leaning over me, his face seriously pissed."What are you doing?"     "What happened to you have your ways?" he snapped.
Quickly he rolled the guard off of me, and I could breath again. I took in a deep breath, and sat up. "They have never come this far off to the side." I said. "I wasnt prepared."
"They do now." He said softer now. His arm reaching out for me to grab.
Without thinking I took it, and he pulled me to my feet. For a second we stood there, our faces millimeters apart. His hand was now on my waist steadying me, and once again, I had forgotten to breath. Turning away, I could feel his breath hot on my neck. "This is why you shouldnt have left." he said, and took a step back. As he did, his fingers brushed the spots where Cal had grabbed me earlier. "What if I hadnt been here to stop him?"
I cringed at the thought. "Thank you." was all I said.
Watching me, he looked confused as if he were expecting me to have said something else. "You're welcome."
For what felt like minutes, he stood there just taking me in; something I wasnt expecting. Inside I wanted to know how, and what he thought of all this. What he thought of me. But then an image of someone else forced those thought away. I stood there, silently, and waited, I had almost forgotten he was engaged.
After another long second passed, he took a step towards me. His fingers coming up to play with the tips of my hair, his hands brushing the top of my chest as he did. He was warm against my skin, and I couldnt help but, shiver. Smiling, his hand fell down my side. His body moving with it. When he stood back up, he was holding my cloak. In one motion, he shook it out, and had wrapped it around me.
"We better get you back." he whispered.
"We should." Was all I said

The End
