Forever is Not Long EnoughMature

Melissa looked at Lazarus then to the Sergeant and back again. She smiled, then muttered under her breath. "No dismembering for me then." She knew Lazarus could hear her and she laughed slightly. Lazarus smiled slightly and tried to take in what the Sergeant had told him. "What do I have to do?" He asked eventually.

"Tell us everything you know. Although." He paused, trying to sound as polite as possible. "You should go home and clean yourself up. A police officer will escort you to the apartment block."

"Um, right. Okay." He stuttered, a little shocked at how rude the man had just been. Melissa turned to him and smiled before whispering in his ear. "Look at it this way, a shower, clean clothes and I will play for you. We should enjoy this bit of freedom while it lasts."

"Oh, I'm not complaining. I'm just taken aback by how quickly everything has changed." He muttered back.

"Well, lets take things for what they are and go." She sighed, walking through the door the police officer held open. "Thank you." She smiled. Lazarus followed her quietly, muttering his thanks to the officer who was still in a daze from Melissa.

As they walked from the building Melissa overheard a conversation between two officers.

"Wow, what a slob." One muttered to the other, laughing.

"Yeah, but I bet he's still hit that." He laughed, motioning towards Melissa.

"Heck. I would hit that, I think anyone would. Lucky bugger."

Melissa growled and walked over to them. She raised her hand and slapped them both in turn. "You both are just pathetic!" She growled, as she turned to walk away the taller of the two turned to the other and laughed, "I'd still hit that." Melissa snarled and punched the guy, breaking his nose. "Take the hint and shut up." And even though he was down he was still laughing.

Lazarus walked up to her and placed an arm round her shoulder leading her out of the building. "They're not worth it." He reassured softly. Melissa nodded, although her curiosity was sparked she didn't say anything. The policeman simply laughed. "It's about time someone did something about him." Melissa smiled in reply.

It didn't take them long to get back to the apartments. The man looked at them. "I'll stay here, I trust you not to run off anyhow." He shrugged and pulled a cigarette out of his pocket. Lazarus and Melissa nodded, and silently ascended the stairs. "Lazarus, can I ask you something? I mean. Sorry if it's a little awkward." Her mind was curious from the perverted officers conversation.

Lazarus pushed open the door to his flat, removing the police tape. "Sure. What is it?" He smiled, opening the door for Melissa.

She stepped in then looked at him, "you know you said you would wait for me. Do you want to... you know?" She blushed at the mere thought and wished she had never even opened her mouth.

"Melissa, you're not even comfortable with me being topless. Of course, I'd love if you were ready to be more intimate... but like I said, I'll wait for you to be ready for that." He struggled to find a way to tell her that wasn't too blunt or crude, and he grimaced at his words.

"Well, it's not that I'm uncomfortable. It's just...I've never had a good experience with men." She waved her hands in front of her frantically. "Not that I group you with such men!" She said rather shocked at her own words.

He laughed and kissed her gently, instantly making Melissa feel at ease again. "I'll do my best to change that for you."

Melissa smiled as he released her to go get a shower. She looked around his apartment. It was clean and she could tell where the forensics had taken DNA, or tried to find blood. But, she found what she was looking for. She picked up her violin and moved into his bedroom. She sat upon his bed and pulled the bow across the strings, playing the first song that came into her head. Their song.

Lazarus smiled as the warm water ran over him. When he got out he looked in the mirror. "Eugh." He sighed, getting a handful of the shaving cream. He had to clean his razor too many times he thought as he carefully slid the blade across his cheeks.

When the water had stopped Melissa placed the violin down on his bed, smiling to herself, she was glad it was beginning to end. But she knew there was still James that had to be sorted out. Lazarus walked out of the bathroom with just a towel around him. He froze for a moment when he looked up, shocked to find Melissa sitting on the bed. "Feeling better?" She asked, tilting her head slightly.

"Much better." He grinned, running a hand across his chin and cheek.

"That's good to hear." She smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck, kissing him softly on his lips. "I'm glad it's starting to end."

"Me too. I missed my shower," he laughed, "and moments like this in the comfort of our home, rather than a cave somewhere."

Melissa nodded in agreement. "Yeah. I miss your bed too." She paused, a blush forming on her cheeks again. "No, I didn't mean anything like that. I mean, I just meant..." She stopped, looking at the floor.

"I know what you mean; we haven't done anything other than sleep and cuddle."

"Yeah." She nodded, still embarrassed but she forced herself to meet his eyes. "I love you." She smiled, hesitantly placing a hand on his bare chest, kissing him softly.

"I love you too." He smiled at her touch, running his fingers gracefully through her hair.

She gently took herself from his arms, sitting on the bed. "You should get dressed." She muttered, but she smiled, happy. He nodded and began to get dressed, Melissa tried not to avert her eyes, even through her embarrassment. She wanted her horrible fear gone. "You ready to go back... or.. do you want to stay longer?" She asked once he had finished.

"I want to stay, with you, forever." He sighed, "but that's not going to happen while they're waiting for me."

"Well. I'll be waiting for that moment too. But till then I shall stay by your side unless you so wish." She smiled.

Lazarus grinned. "Prepared to stay with me forever then?"

"Forever just wouldn't be long enough." She sighed.

"You'll change your mind in a couple of decades. I'll get annoying." He laughed.

"Then I'll be waiting for that moment. Just to prove you wrong." She laughed stubbornly.

Lazarus grabbed her arm, pulling her up off the bed and into his arms where he kissed her softly on the lips. Melissa wrapped her arms around his neck, deepening the kiss. She closed her eyes, savoring the moment, wishing it would never end.

The End
