Re-United at LastMature

They slowly made their way back to the apartment. Although James was strong, Lazarus still slowed him down. But the sun rising over the hills hurried them along. The apartment, to Melissa, seemed warmer now Lazarus was here. She drew the curtains closed and sat beside him, grasping his hand. Her face a painting of concern and love. Her heart untwisted itself and Melissa stopped feeling sick.

James returned sometime later with some food and drink. Lazarus began to stir, the smell of the cooking meat drifted through the air. "Here." Melissa smiled, handing him some water. "I'm so glad you're okay."

Lazarus took the water and gulped it down in one, throwing the glass against the wall, making Melissa jump. "Okay? You think I'm okay?" He growled, turning to face Melissa who almost cowered away from him.

"Lazarus? What's wrong?" She whimpered. James placed the meat on the kitchen side and quickly walked to the door. "I see you need to be alone." He stuttered, quickly exiting the room.

Lazarus sighed, trying to calm himself down. "Sorry... I just... Why did you come find me?"

"Lazarus. I love you, I would die to try and save you. You think I wouldn't?" She took a deep breath and looked at Lazarus, missing his cool blue eyes.

"So who the hell is he?" He snarled, his temper rising again.

"Lazarus! Calm down!" She pleaded, getting up so she could move away from him if need be.

"That's not answering my question, Melissa." His tone was firm and demanding.

"His name is James, he helped me to save you. Why..? Did you think I could betray you so easily!?" She was stung by his comment, Lazarus was everything to her. She couldn't move on within a few weeks of losing him.

Lazarus paused for a while before looking up at Melissa, "James is perfect for you. I'm just an animal, aren't I?"

Melissa shook her head, "Lazarus, what makes you think he is better than you?"

He laughed weakly. "Everything. The first main difference being that he's a vampire." He paused, "and I'm not."

"I don't care! You think if I cared about that I would have stayed so long? That I would have risked my life to save you?" She stopped, locking her deep green eyes with his. "Lazarus. What is wrong with you?" She growled, hurt.

"Sorry," He looked away, embarrassed but he was kind of relieved. "I let things get to me too easily. That hunter... never mind,"

"What did he do to you?" She asked, bending back down to his level, her eyes softening.

"Apart from all the crap with the silver? He was just... saying stuff." He still did not look her in the face.

"What is... 'stuff'?"

Lazarus shook his head. Melissa lifted a hand and stroked his cheek gently. "Lazarus. Don't you trust me?"

"I..." He faltered, "Yes."

"So. Tell me." She smiled softly.

He bit his lip, not wanting to think of the hunter's voice in his head as he thought.  "It's pathetic... he called me an animal and told me I don't deserve to live. It wasn't anything I've not heard before."

"Then.. why has it upset you so?" She asked, tilting her head slightly.

"I just haven't heard it in a few years... and the one who said that before didn't break my arm or start testing for new ways to kill werewolves on me." He grimaced, not only for the thought of the hunter hurting him.

"Lazarus. You are not an animal and if you don't live, neither will I." Her voice was clear and certain.

"But... I think that's what got to me when he said it... I realised he was right. And you would live, don't be ridiculous. you wouldn't have to run around breaking me out of hunter cells."

"I don't care, Lazarus. If I don't have you, I don't want to live." She cried.

"Don't you think you're being a little over dramatic about this?" He wrapped his arms around her and Melissa smiled, she realised how much she missed him.

"No." She shook her head.

He sighed, "sorry. I'm being a dick, arn't I."

"No." She smiled and shook her head again.

"I love you," he whispered, a wave of relief flooding over him.

Melissa wrapped her arms around him, "I love you too." Tears of relief and sorrow began to flow down her cheeks. "Please. Never leave me again."

"I'm sorry, I... I don't really know what I was thinking. I thought it was for the best, at the time. I'm so sorry," He rested his head on hers pulling her closer to him.

"You...you don't think that now, do you?" She asked, feeling his warmth take over her again.

"I wish I could give you a more stable life, sure, but if you insist on sticking with me through this, I can't do anything about it, can I?"

"Absolutely not." She smiled, placing her head against his chest, listening to his heart. "The part of you that loves me most."

"The part of me that loves you the most. All screwed up and broken and patched up again, but it works, still."

"Good. I would hate to lose it, and you with it."

"I don't think you'll ever lose it, Melissa."

"Mine does not work. But I believe you have mine too. It is not much."

"It's more than I could ask for." He smiled, running his figners through her hair.

"I'm sure, you could..." She smiled. "You could of asked for it anytime, it would have been yours." She kissed him softly, full of all the love she had to give. "I am yours."

"You gave it to me. Which makes it mean even more." He smiled.

"Lazarus." She was lost for words, "I love you."

"I know." He laughed. "I love you too."

That day, Melissa fell to sleep in Lazarus' arms, just where she wanted to be. She enjoyed the moment, for she knew. That their running was not over. But as long as she ran with him, she didn't care.
