Caleb was holding the boy tightly and threatening to throttle him. Katherine was yelling at him to get off and leave the boy alone. Lucus was just as confused as I was. “Who are you?” Caleb growled.
“I’m Charlie, who are you?” Charlie replied.
“Caleb, put him down.’ I said. Reluctantly, Caleb put Charlie back on his feet and walked back to join us. An awkward silence swallowed us up for what seemed like the longest minute in history. “Well,” Charlie demanded, “I haven’t got all day!”.
“I’m Caleb.” Caleb said, nodding at the rest of us to introduce ourselves.
“I’m Ember”. Charlie then said,
“Hello Caleb, Lucus, Katherine and Ember. I’m a bit lost and was wandering if you could help me out.”. Caleb raised and eyebrow before saying,
“Ok, but just as a warning, we have to move quickly.”. Charlie nodded and walked along with us in silence.
“So where are you headed?” Katherine asked.
“To the site where the last Oracle died.” Charlie replied. Katherine’s eyes lit up. She looked like a small child who had just been given a pony. Before long, they were chatting enthusiastically about archeological digs and historical sites and a whole bunch of other nerdy things that Katherine was in to. “Don’t they make a cute couple?” Lucus said, grinning madly. I laughed. I suppose Katherine was just happy that there was someone out there who was just as geeky as she was.
Caleb was jumpy the entire time. He surveyed the area at all times, never stopping to rest. “What’s the matter?” I asked him.
“There’s something not quite right about Charlie.” He said bluntly. I nodded.
“I know what you mean. I’m not sure wether or not to trust him.” I said.
“Then what shall we do?”
“Wait for a while and see what we make of him once we’re a little more used to him.” He said. I decided to leave it at that. But there was still a nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach. It was the familiar churning of uncertainty.
