After short deliberation, Lyra headed back to the dance studio. She checked her watch 4:04 p.m. and shrugged. By the time she arrived she knew she’d be almost an hour late but she didn’t care. She knew Nancy would be surprised and happy she had returned at all.
Entering the double doors, Nancy looked up from behind the front desk and she was definitely surprised. “Lyra,” she said with a smile, “Well this is quite nice. I thought I’d have to wait until tomorrow to show you this new routine I’ve been working on for you. Now you’ll have extra time to practice.”
Lyra grinned back, “That’s the plan.” She walked back toward the private session studio room, knowing Nancy would give her time to stretch and get ready. But truthfully, Lyra was stretched out enough. She stopped in the bathroom to put her hair into a neater bun and change back into her leotard and tights. She stretched back and forth on each side and then sighed. “Yeah, I’m good,” she said out loud to herself, laughing quietly before exiting the bathroom.
Nancy was already in the studio at the bar. She had pulled her salt and pepper hair into a tight short bun and changed from her yoga pants into a leotard and skirt. Nancy was somewhere in her 50s, but dancing was her life and she always had the strength for it. “Ready?” she asked, practically beaming and Lyra nodded, putting her bag against the front mirror.
Nancy quickly taught her the new solo routine, with a few new moves she had never tried before, but Lyra got it easily. She did have to practice a couple times to get the whole thing down, but eventually she got it. Nancy added music and Lyra started from the top.
After a little more than an hour, they took a break, sitting down on the wooden floor with their backs leaned against the mirror. As Lyra sipped on some water, Nancy shook her head back and forth. “I underestimate you sometimes, Lyra. You’re not dedicated to practice and don’t come on time, but when you’re here – you’re so good. You pick up things quickly and do it well. I’m just so ... proud.”
“Thanks,” Lyra whispered, drinking more water quietly. She didn’t have much to say because in truth, she wasn’t dedicated at all. Yes, she loved to dance, but it was becoming hard work and she sometimes considered quitting.
“I was wondering if maybe you’d like to take up teaching one of my younger classes. You know how to dance, but you also know how to teach it.”
“So basically you’re asking me to take up more hours.” Lyra stated reluctantly.
“Yes, please, but only if you want to. I don’t want to force you into anything. But we could easily change around some of your classes and work it all out. If you’re willing.”
Lyra shrugged her shoulders, “I would love to, but I’ll have to think about it. I’ve already put school on the backburner so much, not sure if I can do it more.”
Nancy raised her eyebrows. “You don’t have enough time for more classes, but you have enough time for a guy who doesn’t have enough time for you.” Lyra almost choked. “Don’t think I don’t know you, Lyra. I’ve watched you grow up and change, so I know. And I know that when you’re not here, you’re with him. Is it even official yet?”
Lyra laughed, her cheeks blushing. “Miss Nancy! You are unbelievable! But … I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“So that’s a no. Sounds like this boy is using you, if you ask me.”
“Yeah well, I’m telling you anyway. I would consider myself like a mother to you, and so I have every right to give my opinion, and here it is. You need to ask this boy what’s up. What exactly does he want from you and what is he willing to do to get it? You just need to find out if he’s with any other girls besides you, because if he is, that’s a no-no. And okay, I’m done.”
“Thank God,” Lyra gasped. “You’ve certainly been thinking about this a lot it seems.”
“I have,” Nancy admitted, “And since this is the first Wednesday private lesson you’ve attended in over two months, I felt the need to finally voice my thoughts.” She smiled and laughed, leaning over to embrace Lyra.
“Well I do appreciate it, but no worries.”
“Okay, well that’s it for today I guess. You’ve got the dance perfectly already, so you might as well give yourself a break. And when I say a break, I mean actually go to your own room and actually go to bed.” Nancy winked and Lyra just shook her head, gathering her stuff before leaving.
