Zoe rolled over on the bed, stirring slightly. I turned away from the window that I'd been looking out of for who knows how long. She moaned and said something but it was slurred. I frowned. I could have sworn it sounded like my name.
She sat up abruptly, pointlessly gasping; it wasn't like she needed to do it now that she was dead. She looked around and saw me. She started crying all over again. I didn't know what to do, but after a moment's hesitation, I went to her and sat by her. I'd already screwed up her life just by kissing her, what else could I do?
She reached out to me, taking my hand. She moved closer to me and rested her head on my shoulder, now only sniffing quietly. I put my arm around her, knowing it was what she wanted.
"You finally got what you wanted, Zoe," I said.
"What?" she asked, genuinely confused.
"You wanted to be a vampire. Well, you got your wish," I explained, trying to keep the metaphorical venom out of my voice. I stood up and sat heavily on the armchair again. "Why am I so good at fucking things up? Darran and Riley, now you too. Ibiza, then some hotel in Illinois."
"It's okay," she whispered softly.
I glared at her, my eyes going black. "No, Zo, it's not okay. You had a life and I took that away from you. I never had a life to be torn from."
"I don't have a life either."
"Not anymore, no."
"No, you don't understand..." she murmured. "My entire family's dead. What I told you was a lie. I don't have a grandma here. I don't have any grandma at all, in fact."
"Why lie to someone you don't even know?"
"I guess it was more to make myself believe it. What about you?"
"What do you mean?" I asked her.
"Do you have any family?"
"I killed them."
"You... killed them?"
I looked away from her, out the window. "I couldn't control it. They were teasing me, I'd only been a vampire for about six months. They provoked me. That's what I used to tell myself, before I let it all take over."
"Let what take over?"
"The depression, the guilt," I said disinterestedly. "I just... fell into a hole. Darran and Riley try to help, they really do. I guess they just can't forgive me, no matter how hard they try."
"Forgive you for what?" she enquired, not sure if she wanted to know the answer.
"They were my first victims. We were in Ibiza, celebrating Darran's nineteenth. There was this girl. She led me outside and when we were alone in that alley she attacked me. She drained me to the point where I was nearly dead, and she left me to the rats. In that dim, filthy little alley, I died. I didn't go back to the hotel for nearly four days. The venom was still at work - doing whatever it is venom does - so the sun didn't bother me.
"Eventually I had the courage to go back. I hadn't realised what was actually going on. I went back to the hotel while they were getting ready to go back to the strip. They were so glad I alright. And I killed them, unable to control my unknowing need. That was when I realised what I'd become, when they got back up and their eyes were black. Just as yours are now."
Throughout the entire speech, my tone was monotonous and with the last sentence I turned to look at her again.
