"She's right, you know, you are obsessed," Bane growled at him and he opened his eyes again, staring at the wall.
"Shut up," he muttered. Bane snapped at him wordlessly and fell silent again, dragging Lazarus into sleep.
"I'm going to the music shop in the city... you gonna come?" he asked through a lungful of smoke as he looked for his wallet.
"Uh... no," she paused, "thank you." He sighed, knowing she was still annoyed at him. He had been considering not bothering before, but now he was going just to get out of the house. Nodding to himself, he mumbled an "okay" and remembered his wallet was in the bedroom. He found it, shoved it in his pocket and picked up Melissa's rosary and Gabriel's ring, putting them in his other pocket, more out of habit by now than anything, though today, he looked at the rosary for a moment, letting out another sigh.
She curled up on the sofa like a dog and tucked her head into her side, "Good bye, Lazarus," she muttered, not realising he wasn't leaving yet. He gritted his teeth, pushing the rosary into his pocket on top of the ring and cursed inwardly.
"Alright, alright, I know when I'm not wanted," he muttered walking back through the living room, "I'll see you later. I've got work again tonight, I'll be home late."
"I'll...I'll try and be there," she mumbled and he shrugged, though she wasn't looking.
"Okay. See ya," he said, opening the door to leave.
"Wait," she whimpered. He paused and turned, looking at her. She slowly rose, not meeting his eyes instead looking at the floor, "I'm sorry."
"Whatever for?" he queried.
"For, last night. I, I didn't mean to turn it into such a horrible moment."
"Oh. It doesn't matter. I shouldn't be such a sex obsessed idiot."
"No, it's me. I'm four hundred years old and the subject's still tender for me. I want to... indulge more but, I'm still embarrassed," she whispered, still looking at the floor. He waved his hand dismissively and walked back into the apartment, kicking the door shut again and stubbing his cigarette out in the ashtray.
"It's fine. We were brought up to see sex completely differently; I forget sometimes. I'll be more sensitive about it next time," he promised, offering his arms for a hug.
"But... I don't want to be," she sighed, taking him up on his offer, her arms twining round his waist as she turned her head to rest it on his chest, her ear pressed to his heart to calm her down. He held his arms loosely around her body.
"I guess it just takes time," he shrugged.
"Four hundred years is a very long time," she stated plainly and almost angrily. He nodded.
"Yeah, but it's not like you were thinking about sex much while you were running away from your father... well maybe you were," he sighed, "what do I know?"
"You know me well enough... but, I saw my fair share of whores and brothels of every type, I travelled the whole world. But I was never ready to bring myself down to that level although it was so tempting and they seemed so interested in me. It took a lot to save my body."
"I can imagine," he mumbled, remembering how the whore houses seemed to be magnetised, always pulling him back.
She sighed, "But I saw it all and, it allowed my fantasies to grow. I'm embarrassed by it still, but even as a vampire I wanted so much to fall into every pleasure of the flesh." She paused, "It was so enticing and I am curious still now."
"Well you know I'm more than capable of fulfilling any sex fantasies you might have," he muttered, "there's no need to be embarrassed of them, after all."
"Of course there is, I don't want to become like the prostitutes on street corners, looking for money for drugs. I don't want my body to become a useless pile of flesh for anybody to 'climb on.'" She shuddered and he rolled his eyes.
"That's hardly gonna happen, Melissa. Fulfilling a fantasy with your husband isn't going to turn you into a whore."
She smiled weakly, looking up but not so his pulse left the music in her mind, "Of course, how silly I was." He pushed a comforting smile to his lips, kissing her forehead gently. "I should let you go," she sighed, "but come back soon, husband," she savoured the word, embraced it; it was new to her and she loved it.
"You can come with me if you want," he offered.
"No, I need to see if I can get some peace in my mind, Amber's driving me nuts." He nodded and brushed his lips on hers softly.
"Mmm. Good luck with that," he murmured.
"Yes, I'll definitely need it, now go and come back with some sweet music, my love." He gave her a gentle squeeze before letting go of her.
"I will. See you later."
"Yeah," she nodded as he opened the door. He smiled and closed the door behind him gently, lighting another cigarette as he walked out into the hot sunlight.
