I guess I got back into the car while I was crying.
Sounds like something I would do.
I wasn't crying anymore, though.
I was staring at my mom and the man who was my father.
They were talking.
Then they hugged.
Mom wiped her eyes.
She was crying.
What the hell is going on?
Mom started walking back to the car.
She got into the driver's seat.
“Mom, let's go. Please.”
I said, trying not to cry.
She looked at me.
She gave me a hug.
“Anna, I'm so sorry for not being there for you. . .”
“It's all right mom, we'll talk on the way home. Let's go.”
She closed her eyes and shook her head.
“I made a mistake Anna, I got in trouble. The judge said I either go to rehab for 6 months or serve a 4 year sentence in jail.”
“Oh my God, what did you do now?”
“I got drunk. Again.”
“And? They can't send you to jail for that!”
“They're not, I beat up a girl. . .”
“MOM! Why would you do that!?”
“IT WAS RAINING AND SHE STOLE MY CAB!”
I sighed and laughed a little.
“So. . .” She cleared her throat. “Im not going to jail and missing 4 years of my baby's life.”
“Then. . . What are you going to do?”
“Where will I go?”
She pointed to the house.
She has GOT to be KIDDING me!
“No. Your suitcase is in the back.”
“I don't believe this. Where are the cameras? I must be on a game show or something!” I laughed, looking around.
My eyes found my mother's face.
She was serious.
I looked in the back seat.
This is really happening. No, it can't be.
Mom was crying.
A tear rolled down my cheek.
“HOW CAN YOU DO THIS!? I DON'T EVEN KNOW HIM!” I screamed.
She cried more.
I grabbed my suitcase and got out of the car.
I slammed the door.
I went over and stood with the man that I'll be living with for the next half- year.
My mom started the car.
She blew me a teary kiss and started backing out of the drive.
I watched in silence.
Tears rolled down my face.
One after the other.
I was standing with a man I knew nothing about,
next to a run down old shack of a house,
watching my mother and my past turn out of the drive way and continue down the road.
Yeah. Good-bye to you too.
