I stepped out of the salon with my new doo laying blonde on my shoulders. I sighed as my mom walked to the car. I followed slowly. My dad was already at the new house, unpacking and getting the keys.
"I told you it wouldn't be that bad," my mom said. "Your hair looks cute."
I refused to respond.
My mom sighed, "I know you're angry with me, but there's nothing we can do about it. Your dad was moved for work and I didn't want to be so far away from him."
I still wouldn't speak.
"Don't you want new clothes?"
"Katherine, please don't just mope around like that."
"Katherine, if you don't acknowledge me right now, you're gonna be grounded until school starts. No chance to get a head start on making friends, no time to explore the town..."
I stayed completely silent.
"Fine," my mother said. "You're grounded."
She drove the car to my new home, and prison.
