Heroic Willpower

On August 21, the Saturday before school would start for Rio, he and Roxy were watching TV at his house while his mom was at work. Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

"I'll get it." Rio walked up and opened the front door. A young woman, in her early 20s, who had a spiral hat on her head, was at the door.

"Hermano menor!" She exclaimed as he squealed in delight.

"Simone!!" He opened his arms wide and gave her a great big hug. "I didn't know you were stopping by." He turned his head and called out to his friend on the couch "Roxy, guess who's here!?"

Reluctantly, Roxy shuffled to the front door. "Hola, Roxanne!" she giggled, hugging her once she got to the door.

"Um... hey, Simone." Roxy blushed, content yet uneasy with the mass friendliness the young woman gave her. "Here to visit?"

"Well, Benny had an appointment in town, so I decided to drop by and make sure my little brother is behaving."

"Come on, sis." Rio said, bearing a grin across his face.

"Where's Lucas?" She asked.

"Out playing with his friend."

"I feel the need to point it out once again," Roxy snarked "leaving your ten year old brother playing outside another family's house unsupervised is hardly good parenting."

"Relax." Rio said "Their parents are home, what's the worst that could happen?"

"3...2...1..." Roxy counted, when suddenly a crying boy ran to their home. Rio ran to him as Roxy grinned victoriously. "Called it", she said under her breath. Simone, who heard Roxy, turned her head and gave her a disapproving glare. Roxy's smile turned into a frown as she looked down. "Sorry."

"Lucas, what happened?" His brother asked, comforting him.

He sobbed, "I-I was playing with my friend and-and he wanted to show his kinetic powers to me. But then I took it from him by accident and now he's mad at me!"

"Wait, how did you take it?"

"I don't know" he sniffled. "I just suddenly grabbed his hand, I felt this weird energy and suddenly..." He concentrated and began to generate ice out of thin air.

"Lucas, wait!" He heard the voice of his friend, running to him. "I'm...I'm sorry", he panted as he gasped for air. "for...getting mad at you. 'Cause look!" He also began to make ice from nowhere. "I got them back."

--

Later, in their backyard, Simone was showing Lucas and his friend her drilling power by burrowing a hole into the ground.

"Wow, sis. I didn't know you were a Kinetic too. I thought I was the only one in the family."

"Well, the abilities are sometimes random, but yes. Kinetic powers tend to be genetic, save for the occasional skip." She solemnly looked back to the door, where Roxy and Rio sat on the couch watching TV again. Only this time, Rio was sulking.

"Something tells you I should comfort you, but something else tells me I'll regret it." Roxy said, focusing on what was on.

"It's just... I'm glad my brother and sister are Kinetics. Neither of our parents were, so it's pretty lucky of them." He sighed "But at the same time, I feel envious. It's like if they got their own special pony and I got stuck with a lame jackass. No offense."

"None take- Hey!" She jerked her head and glared. Roxy felt she should be angry for insulting her, but instead she had been impressed with him willing to make a joke at someone's expense. Turning her anger down, she made a small grin and nodded. "Well, don't worry. You don't need to be a Kinetic to be special. Besides, you don't want to be a hero; I'm sure you wouldn't want your family to worry about you." She heard her iPod beeping for an emergency. "Crap, and I was getting settled back in, too", she groaned and turned to Rio. "Anyone asks, I went to go get my iPod from home."

"But you have it right there in your hand-" he stopped to think. "Oh, right. The alibi."

She nodded, then grabbed the bag she kept secure and went into the bathroom. She grabbed the suit from the bag and quickly changed. She gave the bag to Rio, who knew full well to keep it by his side, and went out the front door, being absolutely sure that no one saw her leave.

--

About 30 minutes later, she was still gone. It was getting dark and Rio got worried. He went out to the backyard, where his sister was still looking after the kids.

"Hey, Simone. I gotta go drive Roxy to the store. She forgot to get something."

"Okay." She looked oddly at him. "Why feel the need to tell me?"

He shrugged and hummed an 'I dunno' from his mouth. "Just in case you're wondering where we went." He closed the door, went out the front door, got into his car, and safely but swiftly drove to where Roxy was headed. He looked as the sun had gone completely down.

"Sorry for getting myself in trouble", he thought to himself, "but I want to at least try to help you. My family's had a long past of stubborn yet noble deaths; let's just hope it's not my time yet...not just for my family's sake but for your sake too, Roxanne."

After about 3 miles of driving into an unpopulated area, he pulled over to see Star Lass being hurled backwards. She was close enough that they made quick eye contact before she fell back and slammed into the ground, barely missing the concrete which could have easily killed her at the speed she was going. He sighed; she was definitely going to chew him out for this. Suddenly, he saw a hovering figure firing a laser beam at his car, which he narrowly avoided by swerving. He crashed into a tree, but wasn't hurt much.

The figure looked about the size of a 16-17 year old male, but looked and sounded female, and concealed her face with a mask. She was walking to the car as he got out, until Star Lass grabbed her and sent her flying a good length.

"Thanks, Rox-er, Star Lass." he chuckled, but then saw her turn around and giving him a rather nasty look. He gulped, knowing that his prediction about her was right. She proceeded to give him a light but stinging slap across the face.

"I told you to stay home, Valdez. Just what in the hell are you doing here?" Roxy calmly but aggressively asked.

"I was trying to put myself in danger. To help you." He explained

Star Lass only managed to utter a deadpan "What."

"I was hoping it would unlock my true power if I did something that put my life at risk."

"Rio," she put her hand on his shoulder, talking with an authoritative tone. "please don't get involved, you'll only get in the way."

"Are you being sarcastic right now?" He usually wouldn't ask but he noticed a look of concern in her eyes while she was seemingly still scowling in annoyance.

"No" She honestly but coldly responded "I just don't want you to get hurt."

"But, Roxy..." he attempted to protest.

"Look, if there's a time I need you not to have followed me, it's now. That person I'm fighting? She can somehow block my light powers while she uses her own against me, I'm defenseless against her."

"What about your super strength?"

She shook her head. "She has that too. I'm beginning to think she's another Celestian."

"You don't think it's... ?" Roxy turned to him, knowing what the next word coming out of his mouth was.

"You, think? That's new." She joked, then turned back to where she threw the villain who was still lying on the ground. "Well, I doubt Sable would be here. Mom and Dad spent a year in space and found out she was alive, but no one knows where she went. If she were here, she'd have found us by now. Besides, why would she want to go out and try to kill her own sister?"

"Eh, good point." Suddenly, the mystery woman had quickly gotten up and slammed Rio into an old warehouse right next to them..

"Rio!" Star Lass, who shows seldom emotion, panicked at the aspect of her friend injured or possibly killed. The heroine kept her anger under control as she calmly but firmly shouted while zooming to her target, "You'll pay for that, you bi-!" But as she made contact with the villain, she was greeted with a roundhouse kick, sending Star Lass into the warehouse as well.

The mystery woman chuckled. "So this is the power of Star Lass? What a shame, I expected a better challenge from a fellow Celestian."

Roxy muttered, emerging from the rubble "I knew it. But most of us have some combination of flight, super strength, and elemental light. How did you get a fourth ability?"

"I find it odd myself." She grinned, "but I'm not complaining."

Just then, Rio jumped out of the rubble, leaped into the air, shouting "Sole-face Surprise!" and dropped down, slamming his foot into the masked villain's face. This caused her to fall to the floor in agony as she grasped her aching face.

"Ah, you crazy bastard!! What the hell was that!?" Her mask cracked in half, uncovering part of her face and exposing a bleeding nose. She gasped, grabbed the piece of the mask that fell, and said, "You haven't seen the last of me, you pathetic do-gooders!"

She jumped up and flew away, leaving Rio turning back to see an injured Star Lass looking at him in amazement.

"Macario? What was that?"

"I-I don't know. I was in excruciating pain and then I felt an energetic burst of power that I felt I needed to burn. Now, I don't feel anything. I don't mean I'm numb, I mean I don't feel the pain." He stretched his hand out to her, offering to pick her up, but she insisted on getting up herself. She was woozy, but otherwise fine.

"Well, I find that really weird." she added.

His eyes lit up, "I was near death. That attack caused this to happen. Roxy, I think I just found my kinetic power! Yes!!" He cheered and jumped for joy.

"You know you're lucky. I doubt you would have survived that if your powers weren't triggered."

"The thing is, the more confident I become, the stronger I feel. Guess it's emotionally driven. Oh, man I can't wait to tell my folks!"

"Well in any case, let's head home."

"Wait, aren't we going to go after her?"

"She wasn't what the report was about, just someone who ambushed me on my way back." They made their way to Rio's car before Roxy stopped at her feet, then curiously turned to him. "And 'we'? Is there something on your mind?"

"Maybe next time you can... uh, bring me along now that I'm a Kinetic?"

"I work alone," she quickly answered "that's all there is to it."

"Oh, don't give me that Batman bullcrap, Kaizen." he shot back, with a wide grin on his face. "I've just showed you I can handle myself in battle."

She sighed, knowing he wouldn't stop begging until the answer was yes. "Fine, you can join me."

"Hooray!" He jumped incredibly high, having unintentionally unleashed his remaining energy. Once he noticed, he flapped his arms in a futile attempt to fly. He plummeted to the ground, closing his eyes in fear when suddenly he felt himself stop falling. He opened his eyes to see Roxy's face, smirking at his misfortune while she held him in her arms. He just gave her an embarrassed chuckle. "Guess I got carried away."

"You get used to it." They descended back to the ground as Rio drove her back home.

The End
