The Hole in the WallMature

The last thing Julia Gregorio ever posted was 'Good-bye, Facebook'. And that made the tiny hairs on my arm rise. We looked for hours, just finding the crap we knew. It was hopeless. So, we gave up for today and turned on the T.V. It had been quiet this whole time. I looked at the time. 11:30, almost curfew. And we would be going to the plaque at 12.

Hmmm... where are Jacob and Stacey? I didn't give a damn if I sounded jealous. Stacey opened the door, smiling. Jacob walked in, his expression unmoved. There was, however, a slight grin on his face.

"What were you guys doing all this time?" Jacob asked, "You look like crap. Especially you, Haley."

He smiled, widely. I grabbed my pillow and threw it at him.

"Sorry, Stacey," I said, "I didn't mean to hurt your bitch of a boyfriend."

She raised her eyebrows. She always did that when the situation was awkward. Jacob bit his lap. I knew he wanted to leave.

"Oh, I'm sorry," I said, "how silly of me. You didn't ask him to be your boyfriend? And you didn't ask her to be your girlfriend?"

"No," Stacey said, nervously, "we didn't really think of that."

"But, Stacey," he said, gathering himself, "we went on a date... making you my girlfriend."

He whipped out his phone and quickly changed his online status to "In a Relationship with Stacey Green". He kissed her cheek and left.

"Whoa," she said, slipping out of her dress into her pajamas.

I quickly defriended him. What kind of jerk was he?

"Yay! Stacey has a little boyfriend!" Anne Marie said.

Grace was dying of laughter from the expression on my face. I swear to God, she was the girl version of Jacob.

"Haley," Stacey said, immediately noticing my lack of happiness for her, "what's wrong?"

"Nothing," I said, putting on a fake smile, "I'm happy for you."

"It's because of you, you know," she said.

She hugged me.

"Yup, it's all because of me."

My phone vibrated. 1 new message.

Jacob: srsly? u defriended me?

Me: yes

Jacob: its ur fault :)

Me: ok

Jacob: r u really mad?

Me: no...

Jacob: ya u r

Me: ok

Jacob: shit

Me: yup

Jacob: we didnt do anythin... we just talked...

Me: idc

Jacob: but

Me: but what, jacob?

Jacob: srry?

Me: SRRY?!? holy crap u bastard!!!

Jacob: thnk god ur talkin to me :)

Me: go fuk urself

Jacob: u do it 4 me

Me: ok bye

Jacob: fine... bye :)

The conversation lasted ten minutes. Ten minutes too long. I groaned/yawned.

"So, whatchya do with Jake?" Anne Marie asked.

"He took me out to dinner and we just talked. Then we walked around. It was fun."

"Did he kiss you?" I asked.

Grace looked at me, shaking her head.

"No... it would've been awkward."

"Oh, ok," I said, "so when are you to 'sealing the deal'?"

"Not now! Crap, Haley... what's wrong with you?"

"Well, nothing. I mean, apparently you already 'sealed the deal'."

She groaned. And I smiled in triumph. She grabbed her brush and left. Grace and Anne Marie looked at me, both shaking their heads.

"What?" I asked, innocently, "I was just curious."

"Why are you doing this to her?" Anne Marie asked.

"I'm not trying to be mean to her."

"Then what?"

"I don't know," I whined, "it's just that..."

"You want Jacob?" Grace asked.

"He tells me things like 'oh, I really meant having sex with you..." and that "I'm not giving up on you" and crap like that."

"But, I think he means it and I get what you mean," Grace said, after a long pause.

Anne Marie looked at her. Story time.

"The reason that Anne Marie wants to kill me is because of Griffin."

"You like him?"

"No... we kinda hooked up at a party. I mean literally hooked up... before he was even her boyfriend... but obviously she hates me."

"No," Annie said, "Grace, I don't hate you. I just... dislike you."

"That was the nicest thing you've ever said to me. That's sad."

I ignored there little friendship rules fest and walked out of the room. I went to the plaque alone, with a hoodie and a flashlight. I carefully walked in the darkness, hearing the bell for curfew ring. I almost jumped, but I was ok. I shone the light on Adam's plaque. I saw a small hole near the corner. The plaque could come off. I slowly ripped the plaque off the wall and dug my hand into the empty hole. Well, I thought it was empty until I found a piece of paper. I looked at it. It was a copy of the poem that someone stuck in our window. I turned it around. There was picture of Adam and Julia, sitting and smiling together. Underneath it, it said: LIFE SHOULD'VE BEEN LIKE THIS. BUT, LIFE ISN'T EASY. THAT'S WHY I GAVE UP. MAYBE, I WON'T DIE TONIGHT. IT'S MY FATE.

It was written in caps in a red Sharpie. Adam wrote this the night he was going to commit suicide. I felt someone's hand on my bare shoulder. I screamed, feeling my mouth being covered with a hand, the paper slipping from my fingers.

The End
