Understanding Everything

It's only a been couple of hours when we pull into a diner parking lot. Anderson gives me a jacket to wear over my bandage and bloody shirt. I put it on, zip it up, and get out of the car. I follow him into the diner.

We sit near the window, but I slide over to the farthest side of the booth. If the Waymen just so happen to pass by, I don't want them to see me.

A girl about my age comes up wearing a metallic dress. She smiles at Anderson and glances at me, like she's worried that he's with me. I roll my eyes.

Anderson orders us both hamburgers. I haven't had a hamburger since I lived in Shelaan. That was a while ago. I can't even remember what hamburgers taste like.

As soon as the waitress walks away, Anderson leans across the table. "Do you know why I'm here, Alexa?" he asks vaguely. I stare at him. Now that I think about it, I really don't have any idea why he is here.

Taking my silence as a no, he continues. "I work with a rebellion group in Washington. We're trying to stop the Ruler." I still stare at him.

"What does this have to do with you coming here?" I ask.

"We needed to recruit you. You looked very familiar, so I decided to come instead of the others."

"How did you find me?" I ask.

Anderson frowns. "Have you not been connected with the world at all?" I don't answer.

"Alexa, you're all over the news. Everyone's looking for you."

This startles me. Why would everyone be looking for me? "What do you mean?"

Anderson sighs and shakes his head. "Alexa, there was a spy the night you escaped that prison. He saw you get out of there! You are now the most wanted person in history! You are the only one who has escaped the clutches of the Waymen!"

It takes me a while to soak this all in. I'm wanted. They're all looking for me. Everyone. That explain the scared stares from citizens, the taken-aback clerk at the store where I bought my bag. The waitress, glancing at me nervously behind the counter now...

"We need to go," I suddenly say. Anderson blinks. "Get up, we need to go!" I hiss. He looks over at the waitress and understands.

She has a phone in her hand.

Calling the Waymen now.

The End
