Vera's Survival Log
I haven't left Lance's side. I can't leave his side. The Wandering are to blame for this but this time I can't fight back.
"League won't ever find a reason they attacked Earth, you know," Lance tells me. The sound of his voice is comforting. I know I'll miss it.
"I know. It's weird how they didn't attack Earth again. I guess they just wanted to scare us off. Maybe they are just outraged animals looking for the sight of innocence to be killed." I believe my own words. My own words and Lance's. I can't believe the League anymore. I can't trust them.
I take out the pocket watch Lance gave me and held it up against the back of his hand, the blue tint shining in the light. He smiles at the sight.
"I would've returned home with you and introduced you to my family. They would've loved you, you know. They would've known I was happy."
"Lance, you'll get better. We will go back to Earth and-"
"No, I wont. You know that." His eyes stare into mine. "But let's not focus on that, okay? Anyways, so I would've introduced them to you."
"And I would've loved them. Loved how your sisters probably looked like you, how your father's personality coordinates with yours."
"Then we'd make a good life back at home. I'd take you to every movie there is, visit every park. We'd go traveling. Traveling all around the world just so I could see your face light up when we hit the next destination." Tears start to form in my eyes and I blink them away. I can't break in front of him. He's too optimistic for that. "Then when we'd go back to school and learn again. Oh, the wonderful books we would learn from." His breaths are slower now.
"I'm going back to Earth soon, Lance. I'm leaving this place and I'll find your family. I'll tell them of all your courageous battles. I'll tell them of my best friend that turned to a legend."
He smiles and his eyes are losing their sharpness. He might only have minutes now. He takes my hand and laces his fingers through mine.
"I would've married you one day, Vera. Then you'd be Vera Wilson."
This time my tears aren't able to be blinked away. They slide down my face and I smile. "It has an amazing ring to it."
He nods. "You know what I was going to do when you got back on the ship?"
"What were you going to do?"
"I would've hugged you so much. You have no idea how scared I was when you left. Vincent probably thinks I'm a coward for all the fear I had for you."
"No, he doesn't. You're the bravest person I've ever met." I lean in to kiss his cheek. He's almost gone, I can tell.
"I'm not scared of Death," he adds as his eyes well up with tears. "I'll welcome it, saying hi, and wait for you to come back to me. I'll wait forever for you, Vera."
I squeeze his hand harder. "I'll be waiting until I can see you again." More tears are coming from me.
"I can't...I can't see you. All I see is black. Vera..."
"I'm here. I'm here. I'm here." His hand in mine goes limp. "I'm here," I barely whisper the word as the monitoring heart rate goes blank.
