Into the Darkmature

Recommend

Looking into the horizon I never believed I would end up here. Looking around at the hard white concrete of the parking lot I realized that I had been on this earth far too long. Dydric had warned me about this day but I never believed him. I couldn’t live without her any more.

Dydric was my mentor. He found me wounded and dying. He healed me and taught me how to adjust to this new life. He showed me how to fit in with the others. He was older than me by many years. I didn’t even know that it was possible to come to such a place, but it was. Dydric always told me to be on guard and never let him recruit you. No matter how low you might feel. We had heard stories of the fallen one but I never thought I would actually see him. But then I never thought I could fall myself.

All I knew was battle. I had fought off the enemy for as long as I could remember. I didn’t even know that there was a weapon that could hurt us let alone bring us down to earth. I was out on a recon mission when I was surprised by the enemy. They had dispatched my partner and I thought I was in for the same. Unlike human battles when we are harmed or “dispatched” we just return to our base. We are out of action for a day or two which is a long time when you’re on the front line. But then we can return in full strength. When they got to me they pulled out a weapon which I had never seen before. I fought off 7 of them before the weapon came close. The good thing about the enemy is some of them aren’t as strong as us.

He drove the sharp cold blade deep into my side. I had never felt anything like it. We didn’t feel you see so to have this sensation running through my body was overwhelming and I blacked out. I opened my eyes to find I was falling rapidly through the sky. Unable to slow down I looked at the ground as it approached at great speed. I hit with such force my mind couldn’t cope with the rush of sensations. I opened my eyes and it was dark. I could feel where the blade had pieced my skin. I looked down surprised. I had skin. I was then aware of my breathing. A feeling which I hadn’t experienced before. I was in a lot of pain. So much that it overwhelmed me and I blacked out.

I hadn’t seen Dydric for many years. He had gone to search for more of our kind. He was the first they used the weapon on. He knew something big was coming but he didn’t know what. All he knew was he needed to get to them before the others did. We walked among the humans not being noticed. Every now and then you would hear of one of us saving a human and exposing himself but most of the time the humans didn’t believe it was possible. Little did they know that there world was being fought for every day. At any time the battle could swing the wrong way and it would be all over. Having the fallen as rulers would not be good. So as our brothers fought up there we continued the fight down here.

So here I stood. Watching the sun rise for what I thought was the last time. I didn’t even know that she could be possible. All of my kind that I had known up there and down here where all male. I didn’t even know that females of our species’ existed. I felt the scar and a tear fell down my cheek.

I had been looking for Dydric for some time and my mind had been pre-occupied with the search. Suddenly they appeared. Not a pretty sight but then they were pure evil.

“We have a message to bring” the biggest of them grunted.

“Tell him I am not interested. I don’t care what he offers. I will fight and you will die.” I replied.

“Well that’s what he offers”.

“What?” know somewhat confused I noticed that they began to move closer.

“Your life. If you don’t join us then you will lose your life” he replied as the rest of them sniggered.

“My life. You haven’t been able to defeat me yet, so what makes now any different”. I prepared myself.

When we fall to earth we may become part human but we retain our strength and speed. The only time one of our kind dies is of old age or by choice. Not by the hand of another.

“This does”. He pulled out a long sliver sword. So perfect it looked untouched by battle. As if it had just been made.

“A sword. What is a sword going to do? You know you can’t hurt me.” Now slightly bored I began to wonder if I could actually be bothered with it all.

“I can’t but he can”. At this point Cyrus appeared. Dydric had been looking for him as he was worried that he might have been recruited. Once you are recruited you turn into one of his creatures. But Cyrus looked the same. How was this possible?

“Ahhh. Nathan. How nice to see you again. Are you well?”

“WHAT”? I shouted somewhat confused and a little angry.

“No need to be like that. We used to be friends didn’t we?” Cyrus took the sword from the creature’s hand.

“Yes but I think that time has passed. Where is Dydric?”

“Dydric. Dydric. So many. Ahh yes your mentor. He had to go.”

“WHAT”? Anger began to rise in me like never before. Dydric had warned me about anger. Dydric had taught me how to control it but this was slightly different to all those other times.

“Now, now, you don’t want to do that. You know what happens when you do that”

He was right I had to control my anger. I managed to calm down. I repositioned myself and readied myself for a fight.

“You have one choice really. Join us and help me or……”

“Or what” I interrupted.

“Or die”.

I laughed.

“You know that isn’t possible.” But doubt crept into my heart. Quite a lot of us had gone missing recently and I couldn’t help thinking that Cyrus was the reason.

“It is possible. Thanks to this.” He raised the sword. I had seen it before but I couldn’t remember where.

“It’s just a sword” I replied.

“Is it. You have seen this before. I was with you remember. The only thing that can kill us. Here it looks like perfect steel but up there it’s somewhat different.” Cyrus came closer and brought the sword up in front of my face. As it got closer I could feel an intense heat coming of the blade. It was then I know where it came from.

“How. How did you get it?”

“It was easy really. I just signed up for a watch then walked off with it.”

“But that doesn’t make any sense. What about the other one”

“Oh that’s still there. It’s one of the reasons I am down here really. “

“But it can only be used by one of us?”

“That’s true. He came to me while I was still up there and asked me if I wanted to help him. I thought about it and decided to join him. The only way I could retain my uniqueness was to fall on my sword so to speak. So I did. The sword meant I kept my form and enabled me to recruit more of us without the transformation. It’s simple. I stab you with the sword. If you are with me you live. If you are not you die.” Cyrus plunged the sword deep into my body. I could feel the fire cutting into my flesh. My heart raged with anger but then quickly turned to grief at the loss of my friends. How many had this choice thrust upon them. How many died for the course. I begin to feel the life slip away as I fell to my knees. I looked up at Cyrus’s face as he grinned and then he shook his head.

“Not long now my old friend…..” suddenly a bright light blinded me. I felt a sharp pain as the blade was pulled from my body. Weak and unable to stand I began to fall backwards. I was aware of something going on around me but I couldn’t seem to concentrate on it. As I fell back I felt a warm arm catch me. I looked up and saw her face.

“NATHAN”.
