When the nurse announced her test results, I felt the blood drain from my face. Dad's face was a perfect picture of sheer rage and Mom's just looked dissappointed. Damien's hand tightened around mine. The monitor by my bed registered my nerves, the accelerated beeping the only sound in the room for a long time.
"Cira." My Dad began "Why didn't you tell us?"
"I-I didn't know.." Both Damien and I were shaking as he put his arm over my shoulders. My head was spinning with the shock. "I swear, I had no idea!"
"Mr. and Mrs. Crockford, we were always careful." Damien said, more calmly than I could manage. "But nothing is 100% effective.."
My Mom pursed her lips, saying nothing as my Dad carried on lecturing both of us. I closed my eyes against Damien's chest as he went on and on about how I'd disgraced the family, thrown my life away and been stupid, thoughtless and reckless.
"Dad." My voice came out in a croak. "I'm sorry." There were tears on my cheeks as it really hit home. Pregnant. Me. I was going to be a mother..
My Dad opened his mouth to carry on his tirade but my mom put her hand on his arm, cutting him off.
"Honey, it was just a shock for both of us. We will support you no matter what you decide."
I nodded, giving her a small smile. "Thanks Mom."
"We'll give you two some time alone." She replied, barely returning the smile.
"Think they've had quite enough of that already." My Dad grumbled as she steered him out.
Damien and I were silent for a long time, just kind of clinging to each other, stunned.
"Okay.. so I guess this is as good as time as any.." Damien muttered.
I looked at him quizzically, in time to see him go down on one knee. I felt all the air leave my lungs.
"Cira, you are the most beautiful, courageous, funny and intelligent girl I have ever been lucky enough to meet. Even if you weren't carrying my child, I would like nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you."
He opened the small box in his hand to reveal a ring I'd shown him years ago. Even now, I still thought of it as the most beautiful ring I'd ever seen.
"Damien.." I whispered. "Yes!"
Laughing, happy tears in both our eyes, he got up to put the ring on my finger. I pulled him down close for a long kiss.
"I love you, Cira Crockford." He said, in a low voice, meeting my eyes.
I just smiled at him, completely blown away. "I love you too, Damien Hunte."
It was a while before it hit both of us.
"What are we going to tell your parents?"
