Seeing Pho so humble was enough to bring happy tears to my eyes.
"Pho..I love you. You're my little brother and nothing is going to chance either fact."
His eyes, which had looked so unhappy these past weeks, lit up and a genuine smile settled on his lips. I smiled back at him. Damien squeezed my hand and I flashed a smile at him, seeing it mirrored back at me. Pho was brough right to the side of my best.
"I've missed you." He kept his voice low, as though reluctant to admit it.
I ruffled his hair in an affectionate gesture I hadn't used since he was about five. He gave me a half-hearted grin.
"I've missed you too." I said, looking him in the eyes. "I want you to promise me that you'll concentrate on getting better though. Don't worry about me, or your sister. Take care of yourself."
He nodded resolutely. We passed some time together, talking quietly, before the nurses called time.
"You both need to be resting." One of them chided us gently in a manner that reminded me of a kindly school teacher. I think they sensed this was a big moment for us.
As they took Pho away, I couldn't help wondering what had caused the sudden change in him. Before getting shot, he had been hellbent on chaos. Now... he seemed to want to make amends. I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.
"I was talking to Doctor Young, they're saying you passed all the tests with flying colours." Damien was smiling, looking more animated that I'd seen him in a long time. "They might think about letting you out soon."
I pulled him closer to plant a kiss on his lips. "And not a moment too soon." I murmured, drawing a happy hum from Damien.
"They're all asking after you at the bar.. and you're even more of a celebrity at school now." He laughed.
I smiled a little whistfully. "I miss things being normal."
"You were never normal." Damien replied softly.
I laughed, pretending to be insulted. "Charming!"
"You were always extraordinary, Cira." He said, his smile gentle but blinding.
I felt myself soften. "I don't know what I'd have done without you."
"Cira.. there's something I've been meaning to say..."
Unfortunately, we were interrupted before he could finish what he'd been about to say.
