It was the day after the end of term, and the date of Vienna's birthday party. At Allendale Junior School, the end of term always fell on a Thursday, so the day of Vienna's party was therefore a Friday.
Rosetta and Jessica had duly read their invitations with wide eyes and racing minds and had immediately decided that they had to go to the party.
They turned up duly on time and had a very exciting time. They played some party games and after that had a wonderful tea of jacket potatoes and various toppings, followed by the most luscious chocolate cake Jessie had ever eaten.
There were about five minutes after that before the party ended, and Rosetta and Jessie slouched on the sofa with Vienna herself perched on the arm of an armchair nearby. She murmured something.
"I wish," she said.
"I wonder," thought Rosetta.
And then it was time to go home.
