I looked at Mickey's happy face throughout the whole day. In math class, Adam came up to him . Oh, shit. No. He couldn't.
"What do you want?" asked Mickey angrily.
"Nothing, nothing. Geesh. Just came to say hi. To Melanie."
"Leave her alone," said Mickey.
"It's ok, Mickey," I said.
"Anyway," said Adam grinning, "what are you guys doing tonight?"
I hated the way he said that. I stepped on his foot with the heel of my sandal.
"Sorry," I said grinning with my teeth.
"You know what," he said, "I'm late for my ride."
He walked away, probably grinning. Jordan stared at us.
"What was that all about?"
Mickey looked at me. I shrugged.
"Nothing. I don't like Adam. That's all," he said.
"Why? Because he kissed Mel at the fireworks show?"
"No!" said Mickey.
Mickey held my hand on the way out of class.
Amber was waiting on the railing, folding her arms, smiling. He gently let go of my hand, so Amber wouldn't see.
"What are you smiling about?" I asked walking toward her.
When Mickey went to get his car, I talked to her about the whole Adam thing.
"Why are you going to Adam's house tonight?"
"Huh? How'd you know? You jealous?"
"No. But why are you doing this? Going against Mickey?"
"Well, I found out Mickey comes to your house every night. Plus, we haven't had any physical contact ever. And Adam is hot."
"So all you look for is sex?"
"No... but Mickey is hot. And I love that. But I just need a little fun."
"Fun? Amber, you're sick. Just like Adam. You guys are perfect for each other. and just so you know, Mickey is more than hot. He sweet and kind and considerate. He really cares for you. And if can't see that, well, that's your loss, bitch."
Amber gasped and her mouth turned to the shape of and "O". Mickey stood by his car and waited. Shit. How much of that did he hear?
"So, you coming with us?" he asked smiling. Ok, he was still happy. That means he couldn't have heard anything.
"No. Remember, I brought my car this morning."
"Oh, right." He sighed and Amber walked toward him glaring at me. When he wasn't looking, I middle-fingered her. She got angry. She pulled Mickey toward her and kissed him like crazy.
"What was that for?" I heard Mickey ask.
She glared at me. And she started to make out with him. It bothered me. It was as if a hole was being dug in my heart. It bugged me that she still chose to kiss him even if she was going to Adam's house tonight.
I had to do something.
