Ignoring the disappointment, I left a message. “Hey Jensen. It’s Roxie. I was just wondering if you could call me back as soon as you get this message? It’s…kind of urgent. Not really urgent though – I mean like, not a matter of life and death or anything so if you’re busy, it’s totally fine if you don’t call. Erm…yeah. I hope you’re doing okay, bye!”
Hanging up, I looked at my phone and went over what I just said in my head. He must think I’m a love-crazed teenager after hearing that, it was overflowing with awkwardness. Not to mention the way my voice got all squeaky in the process. Before I could make any plan to call back and make a bigger fool of myself, I heard someone call out to me.
“Oi! There you are!”
Looking over my shoulder, I noticed Lea walking grumpily over to me with her hands on her hips.
“I’ve been looking everywhere for you! What are you doing here?”
Better to keep your mouth shut about calling Jensen; she would just push you harder about the whole reunion thing. Clearing my throat, I replied, “Just chilling in the sun.”
“Oxymoron,” she pointed out then reached her hand out to me. “Come on, I’m going over to Jet’s place. We could chill there instead with cookies and popcorn!”
I let her drag me away, listening to her yap on about how camping last night had been awesome and that although everyone must be exhausted today, her and Jet were not and that I had no choice but to be part of this team. Even though I groaned about it to her, inside I knew there was no other way to have fun except with Lea. She did bring the craziness to the group. Besides, feeling the heaviness of my phone in my pocket was a reminder that I needed a distraction.
