Zach’s eyebrows shot up. “What?”
“We should really get going now,” I said and stepped out, hooking my arm with his. “Bye Lea, I’ll see you later.”
I thought I heard her grumble something but I didn’t catch it as I closed the door behind me. Zach shot me a questioning look. “She seems nice.”
“She’s just slightly protective of me, that’s all.” In an attempt to change the topic, I said, “So where are we headed?”
“No where too special since it’s our first date. I like to take things slow.”
I snorted. Zach and taking things slow – what a joke. He seemed to have caught onto my train of thoughts as an awkward smile made its way to his lips. “I know what you’re thinking and trust me when I say, I have changed.”
I couldn’t believe that in a million years, even if I wanted to but saying that to Zach wouldn’t have been very nice so instead, I smiled and nodded. The two of us walked in silence mostly, making occasional chatter about things not too important from time to time until we finally came to a stop in front of a rather jazzy looking restaurant.
“You like Italian, right?”
I grinned. “I like anything delicious.”
He laughed at that and winked at me, taking hold of my hand. “My kind of woman.”
We were led to a table in a more secluded side of the restaurant which I had no doubt that Zach had arranged for beforehand. The sound of violins softly strummed through the air as classical Italian music played from the speakers. It was only after giving our orders to the waiter did things start to move forwards.
“You know,” Zach started, smiling sheepishly, “I’ve had the biggest crush on you for like…forever.”
“Really?” I was genuinely surprised. I had never been considered ‘crush-material’ back in school so this came as a pleasant shock to me.
“Yeah. Practically everyone could tell so it’s a wonder you didn’t find out.”
“Everyone?” I shook my head at him. “Trust me, if any of my girlfriends particularly Nancy, had known that Zach Klezner crushed on me, they would not have held back that information. You were only just considered one of the most popular guys in school.”
He pulled a face at that. “I was considered one of the most popular jocks in school. And we all know what that translates to.”
“Nice body and loved by all the chicks?”
“No…stupid, and crazy for one night stands.”
I stifled a laugh upon hearing that. Never had I figured that Zach was one to be playfully straightforward but at least he knew what the ‘lower cliques’ thought of him back then.
