My eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the light in the room. I was wrapped up in a comforter, with half of it hanging off the couch. It took me a while to notice that the television had been turned off, and that an extremely delicious scent was wafting in the air from across the hall. And when the realization struck me, my stomach flipped.
You idiot! I scolded myself in my head as I quickly got to my feet, pushing aside the comforter with my eyes flickering to the clock which read ten minutes to five. I hurried out the room and towards the source of laughter which was coming from the kitchen. Had Mrs. Reed or Mr. Sterling come home early? Gosh, what would they think of me if they had?
My voice suddenly lost itself. Of all the things I hadn’t expected – one of them was me falling asleep on the couch. And another, was Jensen to show up without a warning.
“Roxie!” Melanie cried, jumping off her stool and running towards me to give me another one of her bear hugs. No doubt she’d learnt that nickname from her one and only older brother who stood there wearing gigantic oven mitts and holding what looked like a pan of brownies.
“Jensen came home early!” She yelled, tugging at my jeans.
I looked down at her, a small smile appearing on my lips. “I can see that Mel.” From the corner of my eye, I saw him set down the pan then take of his oven mitts, observing me keenly as if he expected me to run out any second.
“We’re going to have so much fun now!”
“Oh no,” I said quickly, bending down to match her height. “Now that your brother is here, I’m going to head home as well. You don’t need a baby-sitter anymore.”
“B-but…” Her lips quivered like she was about to cry. Guilt sluiced over me and I grimaced a little on the inside. I hated to see her like that, especially when I was the cause of it. “We could have fun together. The three of us.”
You can kill yourself later Roxanne. “Okay then…I’ll stay a little bit longer.”
