I was over Mickey's house the next morning. Sam had finally quit and life was going ok. My parents had come back from Hawaii and Bruno and Summer went back to Oklahoma to look for a place of their own. Nick was still here, usually hanging out with Sofie, the neighbor's daughter.
It was around 12:00 when Heather called. He put it on speaker.
"Hey, Mickey," she said.
"Hi. What do you want?"
"Um... you wanna hang out tonight... just you and me."
I wanted to kill her. She was my best friend since second grade. She was the one who told me I was in love Mickey. What the hell was she doing?
"Um... no," said Mickey.
"Why? Is Melanie there?"
"No. She's not," he said lying.
"Yeah right. You know you like me."
"Heather, look, you're my friend and all, but I don't like you. At all. Not in that way. I love Mel. And that's that."
"Fine. But you'll come around."
"Heather, why are you doing this? You're in love with Jordan."
"Not anymore. He's in love with Melanie."
"Yeah, that's right."
"He can't... be..."
Mickey hung up.
"Is he?" he asked.
"I don't know, sweetheart."
Mickey placed a hand on my cheek and then dialed Jordan's number. He answered.
"Hey, dude," Jordan said.
"Are you in love with Melanie?"
"No. I am not. She's just my friend. I'm in love with Heather. Where'd you get that from?"
"What is wrong with her?"
"I don't know. Try calling her."
"Already did. She won't answer."
"Okay, man. But, I am not answering her calls."
"She's calling you?"
"Yeah, I don't know why."
"She thinks she's in love with you."
"Shit. Doesn't she understand that I'm in love with Melanie and I always will be?"
He looked at me, smiling.
"I don't know man. Something's wrong with her."
"How many times are we gonna say that?"
"I don't know. Well, I gotta go."
Mickey looked at me with pleading eyes.
"With what and how?"
I hugged Mickey. He smiled and that smile faded when Heather called again.
"I'm not gonna answer that."
What was happening? My sister quits, Heather's hitting on Mickey. What's gonna happen next? Amber and Adam somehow returning? I spoke too soon.
