Chapter 24

‘You ruined my life, Father. All because you were embarrassed about the ministry finding out.’ I said my voice calm. ‘If the Ministry knew what you ha done, what would they say?’ hiding my hate and anger was difficult, but I managed. Advancing on my father slowly, I said ‘One child in Azkaban, because he hate his family. He doesn’t know why he hates them so much, but it’s because of the promise he made when he was younger. He has never forgiven you.’

‘Guinevere…’ Adrian said, worried.
I put my hand up, stopping him. ‘Sorry, Adrian. Don’t call me that. I don’t know...I don’t know who I am at the moment.’
He nodded, understanding that I neither Guinevere nor River at the moment.

I looked at my mother. She was so frail, and I knew from the Daily Prophet how ill she was. I felt guilty for what I was about to do, but I had to. ‘Mrs Crouch, can I talk to you privately?’
She nodded, and gestured to the next room. Following behind her, I heard her say quietly ‘you don’t have to call me that, you know. I am your mother.’
When we were sat down in the room, I looked at her. ‘I want to go to Azkaban.’
She smiled. ‘I thought you might, but I do not think your father would let you.’
‘He has no choice in it. I have an idea, but I don’t know if you will like it.’ She nodded for me to carry on. ‘I know what Barty did, but I don’t care. I want to meet him, and I want to get him out.’
She looked at me. ‘That’s practically impossible.’
‘Practically. You have a huge amount of Polyjuice Potion here. We could use that. I could go in his place, getting him free. He looked after me as a child, now it’s my turn.’
She thought for a moment. ‘No.’
‘Why not?’
She smiled. ‘Because you are young. We shall do this, but it wont be you. I will swap with him. You are young, and you need to know him. I am old, and dying.’

‘Then how are we going to do it?’
‘You and I will go, and your friend will stay with my husband. If we use some potion for you, to look like your father, we shall take some for me and Barty to swap. And I will carry on taking it till I die.’ I had a feeling she had thought about this before.
‘But why do you want to do this?’
‘Because I am your mother. And I have never stopped loving you or your brother.’ She stood up. ‘Come on. If we are going, we need to tell your friend.’

We walked back to the other room, where Adrian and my father were sat opposite each other, Adrian tapping his wand on his knee, watching every move my father made.
‘Adrian,’ I said. ‘Me mother are going to Azkaban. Can you stay here and make sure he doesn’t do anything?’
Adrian grinned. ‘With pleasure.’
‘Oh, and we’ll be needing this,’ I said, picking up the cauldron, and pouring the potion into flasks that I ad got. ‘And this. ‘I went over to my father, pulling out some hair.
He flinched. What are you doing?
‘You will find out.’ I said, smiling, putting the hair in one of the flasks. It turned a murky green. ‘Cheers, dad.’ I said, drinking it, becoming a clone of him.
I looked at my mother. ‘Let’s go.’ I said to her, walking out the door.

The End
