Sonic awoke in a dark, smelly room. He hurriedly stood up - and hit his head painfully on something solid. The impact made a metallic ringing sound. Sonic realised with horror that he was inside a tiny cage!
"Ow!" he cried.
"Hello?" said a timid voice next to him.
In a connecting cage sat a small, blond-haired boy wearing a yellow t-shirt and denim shorts. He looked pretty ordinary apart from the golden fox ears on his head and two gold fox tails from his rear.
"I'm descended from the kitsune," said the boy quietly. "An ancient race of magical fox folk. I used to be able to conceal my ears and tails and fly, but now I'm too weak to do anything. I'm Tails, by the way."
"I'm Sonic," said Sonic, and the two shook hands through the bars.
"I wish I could get outta here," said Tails, rattling the bars. "If I had my magic then I'd probably be able to unlock them."
Sonic hit at the bars, but they were made from strong steel and wouldn't budge.
"What's so different about you?" Tails asked.
"My speed," said Sonic. "But I don't see how speed can bust me out of a metal cage!"
He zoomed at the bars, but all that did was get him hurt. Feeling depressed, he curled up into a ball while zooming and was surprised to hear a sound like...metal bars splitting.
Standing up, he saw that he had smashed open his cage.
"Wow!" exclaimed Tails. "That was awesome! You curled up into a ball of blue energy and smashed up the cage!"
Sonic tried it again, smashing open Tails's cage.
