Gabriel stepped out of the shower, freezing but clean he hurriedly got dressed and left the little room. Dawn was sitting on the bed, his bare feet on the on top of the covers, he had taken his shirt off.
“Dawn?” Gabriel said, warily moving to the bed.
“I'm fine now” Dawn said but Gabriel could see the fine layer of sweat that covered the daemons skin, the black lines were gone and a half drunk coffee sat on the tiny bedside table. Morgan was perched on the kitchen counter, worry etched on her face.
“What’s going on?” Dawn asked his voice vague and sad.
“How do you mean?” Gabriel asked Dawn sighed.
“This place was designed to keep people safe, but it hasn’t.” Dawn pulled the bottle of JD from his bag and frowned at the inch of amber liquid in the bottom.
“I'm sorry I didn’t tell you where I was going.” Gabriel said gently, refusing the offered bottle. “You have it. Medicinal purposes only.” Dawn laughed and Gabriel smiled as he saw the daemon visibly relax.
“Shall I go and tell everyone what's happening?” Morgan asked.
“Not alone.” Gabriel said firmly.
“It’s next door.” Morgan smiled.
“I don’t care.” Gabriel growled.
“Besides Chrys is waiting outside.” Gabriel's frown deepened “Deacon’s with him.”
“Good” Gabriel nodded “tell them where I've been and that Dawn's okay and anything else”
“Like what?” Morgan asked Gabriel sighed and shrugged.
A few hours later Dawn sat quietly a piece of charcoal in one hand, his sketchbook lay on his lap. His brow furrowed in concentration as he drew, Gabriel lay on the bed thick cotton trousers and a hoodie vaguely kept him from shivering. His clawed hands were linked behind his head as he looked at the boards on the ceiling. He jumped slightly as Dawn suddenly stood.
“What?” Gabriel asked looking at him, Dawn put the drawing pad on the chair and looked at the ceiling running his hands over his hair then looked at Gabriel.
“You asked me to be honest with you.” Dawn said quietly Gabriel propped himself up on his elbows, nodding slowly. “I don’t think…” Dawn started then he frowned and shook his head. “Remember the wolf city?”
“Which one?” Gabriel asked and Dawn smiled sitting down on the bed his back facing the vampyre.
“The second one.” Dawn said.
“Since then I've been having issues with my daemon form, I didn’t mean to change in Paradise.” Dawn sighed “and it wasn’t right when I did.”
“Not right?” Gabriel asked Dawn turned to him.
“It hurt, more than usual.” Dawn said “and since it’s been closer to the surface than I care to admit.”
“Could it be stress, our situation?” Gabriel asked resting an uncertain hand on Dawn's shoulder. Dawn rested his own hand over Gabriel's claws.
“It may be, but its taking a lot out of me.” Dawn looked at the ceiling again. “I'm low on magick and feel like crap.”
“So what will help.” Gabriel asked his voice gentle for once. Dawn smiled tiredly at his friend.
“I think I need Amarantine to hurry up and get here.” He said “that’s why I've waited so long to tell you I thought he'd be here by now.” Gabriel nodded.
“He should be.” Gabriel moved so he was sat properly behind Dawn, his arm still around the daemons shoulder. “Can I do anything?” Dawn's smile was warm this time.
“I don’t think so sweetie.” He said “I believe it’s why I've been so short tempered and touchy feely. I hate being ill.”
“I don’t think I've seen you ill before.” Gabriel said thinking carefully.
“I don’t think you have,” Dawn agreed “you’ve seen me hurt but not ill.” Dawn looked down at the hand that wasn’t resting on Gabriel's and as if it reminded him he checked his watch. “Are you going to the tunnel tomorrow?” he asked.
“Yeah, if I'm allowed” Gabriel growled Dawn turned to snap back but stopped as he saw the smile.
“You’re allowed, just please, be careful.”
“I’ll check in with Allegra.” Gabriel said and Dawn nodded.
“Okay, well its gone twelve, I need sleep and so do you.” Gabriel nodded and stood. “Sweetheart?” Dawn said quietly Gabriel looked at him, Dawn stood slowly and raised one arm reaching to the vampyre. The hug was brief but Dawn was happy with it, tired but happy.
