What Helps?Mature

“Of course it matters” Dawn said looking down at the vampyre in his lap.

“It doesn’t matter” Gabriel said slowly someone knocked on the door and Gabriel sat up sharply pulling out of Dawn's arms.

“I’ll get it” Dawn said wishing that Gabriel had stayed where he was. Dawn stood up and crossed the room Gabriel turned to see who it was and froze for a second as Morgan and Allegra came in.

“Hi” Morgan's smiled at him.

“Hey” Gabriel said after a moment.

“I found something for you” she said she pulled a long piece of black leather out of her pocket and Gabriel felt his heart begin to race as he watched her.

“Gabriel you’ve gone white as a sheet” Dawn frowned.

“It’s for your hair” Morgan frowned wondering at the vampyres reaction. Gabriel tried to smile he could remember the sting of the strap across his cheek a little too clearly and he stood up.

“Excuse me” he said heading to the bathroom. Locking the door he took a deep breath as he ran the cold tap waiting a moment for the water to clear then using one of the flannels that were in the room he soaked it and pressed it to his face.

In the bedroom Morgan sat down on the bed.

“What did I do wrong this time?” she asked sadly Dawn shook his head.

“Nothing” he said he sat down and put an arm around the girls shoulders.

“Did you talk to him?” Allegra said sitting down on the other side of her daughter, Dawn nodded.

“I tried” he said quietly.

“How’s he coping?” Allegra asked.

“He says he's fine, but I can see an explosion coming up” Dawn sighed.

“Should we go?” Morgan sniffed.

“I don’t know” Dawn sighed “I don’t know what to do anymore”

“Dawn” Allegra said “don’t give up he needs you”

“I know but I don’t know how to help him” Dawn said “I've tried everything” Dawn shut his eyes and took a deep breath.

“Just be there for him” Allegra said “come on Morgan” the two women stood up.

“I'm sorry” Morgan said “I thought I was helping”

“You were” Dawn smiled sadly “he reacts differently to all sorts of things it’s just a gamble as to what going to affect him” Morgan hugged Dawn tightly drying her eyes on Dawn's shirt. “Thanks” Dawn said smiling as he realized.

“Sorry” Morgan said fresh tears coming to her eyes.

“Dawn” Allegra said “to change the subject I have some washing to do later”

“There’s a laundry here?” Dawn asked Allegra nodded. “I might join you then” he sighed. “It’ll give Gabriel some time to himself.”

“Are you sure that’s wise?” Allegra asked.

“No idea” Dawn smiled.

“I’ll bring some valerian tea along later for you both” she sighed “it might help both of you sleep” Dawn nodded.

Inside the bathroom Gabriel was sat on the crude wooden floor staring at the copper pipes on the wall. He looked up as the lock on the door clicked back and Dawn opened the door.

“I didn’t know you could do that” Gabriel said numbly.

“I can do a lot of things” Dawn smiled. “Come on” Dawn pulled Gabriel up gently by his arm and led him out of the tiny bathroom.

“I'm sorry” Gabriel said “did I upset Morgan?”

“A little bit” Dawn nodded Gabriel ran his hands over his hair.

“I didn’t mean to” he sighed.

“I know and I think she knows” Dawn sat down on the bed he could feel the leather strap in his pocket. “Now do you want to tell me what all that was about?”

“My dream that’s all” Gabriel said dismissively.

“Morgan with a piece of leather triggered that?” Dawn asked “you’ve got to explain or I won’t understand”

“She strangled me” Gabriel shrugged Dawn shook his head in disbelief.

“What Morgan?” he said Gabriel nodded.

“She was with mother I was back in the cells”

“Oh Gabriel” Dawn said he stood up and pulled the leather from his pocket he felt a slight stab of guilt as he saw Gabriel tense up slightly he held it out to the vampyre his palm open. “Take it” the daemon said. Gabriel moved nearer to him and he looked down at the daemons hand his hair fell into his face warily his hand hovered for a moment over the daemons then he gently lifted the soft leather up. “see” Dawn smiled “nothing to worry about”

“I know” Gabriel nodded “it was just seeing her with it after that dream” Dawn smiled gently.

“Have you had the dream before?” Gabriel shook his head.

“No it was a strange one” Dawn moved towards him and pushed the loose strands of hair out of the vampyres face.

“Why do you do that?” Gabriel asked frowning Dawn smiled.

“I like to see your eyes” he said.

“Fair enough” Gabriel shrugged he moved away from Dawn and pulled the band from his hair he tucked it safely into his breast pocket then unravelled his braid. Dawn made a slightly strangled sound as he looked longingly at the vampyre.

“Dawn, don’t look at me like that” Gabriel growled as he tugged the brush through his hair.

“Like what?” Dawn said.

“Like you're about to jump me” Gabriel said putting his brush down on the worktop. He didn’t move to do his hair up as Dawn moved towards him he backed up slightly.

“I'm not going to jump you” he smiled.

“Then back off” Gabriel growled raising his hands.

“put those down” Dawn grinned “they're sharp” Gabriel's back hit the worktop Dawn moved the vampyres hands and gripped the vampyres shoulders “you honestly believe I would ever hurt you?” he frowned Gabriel looked up he was near enough that he could see tiny gold flecks dancing in the daemons brown eyes.

“Dawn” Gabriel said warningly.

“Answer me and I’ll move” Dawn said.

“I don’t know” Gabriel said. Dawn smiled and moved Gabriel slightly he began carefully braiding the vampyres hair again. Gabriel shivered slightly not entirely unpleasantly. Dawn took the leather strip from the worktop and he felt Gabriel flinch quickly he tied off the end of the braid Gabriel turned to look at him.

“Dawn” Gabriel frowned not knowing what the strange feeling he had was.

“No sweetheart” Dawn said smiling “I will never hurt you except to help you” Gabriel frowned and the relaxed and tingly feeling vanished.
“What?” he growled.

“If I'm stitching you up or something like that” Dawn said “but never on purpose” Gabriel felt the blood rise and Dawn smiled.

“What’s the blush for?” he asked

“Nothing” Gabriel said quickly Dawn didn’t push instead he changed the subject.

“I'm going to the laundry later” he said “did you want me to take any of your things?” he leant down to his own bag pulling out his clothes he looked up to see that Gabriel hadn’t moved. “What’s the matter?” he asked trying to keep his voice light.

“I've got a few things” Gabriel said.

“Change your shirt” Dawn smiled “it’s got blood on the back” Gabriel nodded and walked to his bag he pulled out a black t-shirt and began unbuttoning the shirt he was wearing. Dawn looked up as Gabriel began to tug his clean t-shirt on.

“Hang on”

“What for?”

“I said I wanted to look at your shoulder.” Dawn smiled.

“Its fine” Dawn sighed

“Are you going to come here?” he asked “or do I have to come and get you?” Gabriel growled and walked to the daemon. “Turn around” Dawn said smiling again. “I can’t see it if you're facing me” Gabriel grumbled but did as he was told. “Well that explains that” Dawn said.

“Explains what?” Gabriel asked.

“You’ve torn a stitch that’s all”

“Can I put my shirt on now?” Gabriel growled.

“You don’t have to” Dawn grinned “I don’t mind” Gabriel sniffed and pulled his t-shirt on twisting his arms up behind him to do the Velcro up beneath his wings.

“You’re getting cruder” Gabriel frowned at Dawn.

“I can be worse than that” Dawn said standing up and dumping a pile of clothes onto the bed.

“I’d rather you didn’t” Gabriel grumbled Dawn laughed.

“One day you might like it” he grinned.

“You wish” Gabriel said

“I live in eternal hope sweetheart.”

“Will you stop calling me that?”

“So I can’t call you sweetie and now I can’t call you sweetheart” Dawn said as Gabriel retrieved his hairbrush from the kitchen worktop “can I call you pumpkin?” Dawn grinned ducking as Gabriel launched the brush at him. “Missed” he laughed.

“I’ll get you one day” Gabriel growled.

“I'm sure you will” Dawn grinned “I might get you too” Gabriel rolled his eyes.

“I'm going to find Morgan and apologize” he said Dawn smiled properly and nodded.

“Sounds good” he said.
