*Hey...* The text reads, and I frown. Why the points of ellipses? I reply with a simple question mark and bury my nose back in my book, not noticing the small beep that my phone emits at a new text message. What gets my attention is the three beeps that follow in rapid succession.
*I'm sorry, I just needed to talk*
*Please don't ignore me, I really need you*
*Are you there? God dammit, please answer me.*
*I really need you, you told me you would be there. I just need to know someone is...*
What the hell? I dial his number as fast as my fingers will allow and after a couple of seconds I hear a breath. "Hello?" His voice is raspy and it sounds like he's been crying.
"Harry, what's wrong? I'm here now, I was just reading. Are you crying?!"
"No." A strangled cry emits from his lips, betraying him. "Ok, yes. I'm sorry I just.."
"You have no need to be sorry. Just tell me what's wrong." I cut him off, hoping the words will sooth the frown out of his voice.
"I'm just so fed up with everything. I hate it. I just hate it. I can't even stand myself right now and I just need someone." As he talks I am checking my bank account. I don't really have enough; it will be a stretch when I get back, but I'm going to see him. The thought didn't even pass my mind before I was buying a plane ticket.
"You're in Florida, right? Orlando?"
"Yeah, but why do you...?"
"I'll be there in four hours. Pick me up from the airport, and for the love of all that is good in this world do not do anything stupid."
"I can't... I don't think it's safe for me to drive right now, but I'll have someone pick you up. I promise I won't do anything stupid. Not until I can talk to you."
I frown at his words but am thankful he agrees not to do anything. "Ok" I say, nonchalantly, "See you soon." And I leave without everything but my i.d. and my phone, rushing to save the boy I love from making the mistake that would end me. Ending himself.
