Hawthorn Sanitarium

Welcome to the Hawthorn Sanitarium.

For those of you who are new here lets get one thing straight; no one here is crazy. The residents, like most people, have certain problems and they need help with these problems. Some have illnesses that they need help managing and learning to live with. We, the staff, are here to help them work on these problems and help them get better. While here you will have to obey the rules and do as asked if you can do this you will be granted more privileges, such as being able to use the computer or go for a walk around the grounds alone. Failure to respect the rules and authorities will result in privileges being taken away or confinement.

Our motto here, which you will see painted in most rooms, is ‘The first step is understanding, without it you cannot take further steps.” This means before we can even begin to help you, you must first be willing to accept and understand your diagnostics. Once you can come to terms with this we will be able to help you deal with it and find medicines that can most of the times make the problems seems to disappear. Do not let this fool you. Although you no longer may seem sick that doesn’t mean it still isn’t there. This just means the medicine is doing its job and at no point should you stop taking your medicine unless told to do so by a doctor.

You will be in a room with no more than 5 other residents at a time of the same sex. At no point are you to go in a room containing the opposite sex. All residents are expected to attend group sessions, which all residents call ‘circle’, twice a day; the first session beginning just after breakfast at 9am and the other after dinner at 6pm. You will be woken up at 7am sharp every day except Sundays in which case you will be woken at 8am. Monday to Saturday you will start doing your morning chores at 7:30 am and then eat breakfast at 8:00am and then resume chores until it is time for circle. After circle you can go check the white board inside your room and see your schedule for the day. Lunch will be at 11:30 and then you will resume your schedule you were assigned in the morning. Dinner will be at 5:00 pm followed again by circle. After circle unless you were given kitchen clean up you will have free time. During free time you are welcome to watch a movie in the living room or play board games or you may go outside if you get an orderly to assist you. Everyone will be in bed with lights out by 10:00pm and not a second later. If you have any questions you may ask any residents or an orderly member.

Now if you will follow me I’ll show you to your room.

The End
