.05 Questing: FreelancersMature

Kayli didn’t stop until she was safe in the backup headquarters before she stopped to catch her breath. Her ribs hurt and her legs were burning, but she was afraid, afraid that something was going to go wrong again. Too many things had happened these few days and everything had been going wrong. She was alert all day and night and she was getting so much more tired about it. It was really hurting her mind.

Kayli sat down at the coffee table and took a deep breath before she set the notebook down. She began flipping through each page, inspecting each page carefully. The instruction were unusually clear and simple and Kayli couldn’t help but feel that there was something wrong with this. It couldn’t just be this simple. Nothing was this simple.

But then Kayli shook her head. Maybe she was just being paranoid. Maybe she was just thinking too much. And that, she rather agreed to.

Kayli sighed and closed the notebook. She would take a closer look at that later when she had more time and energy to focus. Until then, she had to find a way to gather all of the scattered freelancers. If she was to create the Third World there need to be couple things that needed to happen: they needed to become more powerful, more people need to come, they need to gather weapons, and they need to get rid of anyone against them.

And that meant breaking the oath of a freelancer.

Kayli took in a deep breath. This was a large thing to say. If this really happened then freelancers would no longer exist. She would have to be careful. And even when this did happen, she couldn’t let the news get out that easily or else all of her effort would be put to waste.

Kayli looked around and was about to head to the back room when the front door blasted open. Kayli looked up and was about to expect another one of those fools here for revenge, but instead she saw a familiar figure - Kyle.

“Kyle?” She asked, walking back up to the front, but she stopped short, afraid that this might be some trap of some sort as well. “What bring you here?”

Kyle was there with someone behind him. A girl. What was he doing with a girl walking behind him? While she was hooded and Kayli couldn't see her face, Kayli could tell it was a girl just from how she held herself.

“We need some help.” Kyle went straight to the point. “Can we come in?”

“Of course!” Kayli gestured for them to enter and they walked into the place. Kayli guided them to the back of the room to where her coffee table was and let them take a seat at the table. Kayli sat down across from them and smiled.

“What can I do for you?”

Kyle’s face was clouded and dark and Kayli knew that it would not be something easy if Kyle couldn’t even do it. He was smart. He knew the tricks.

“Have you heard about the new queen?”

Kayli nodded.

“How could I not?”

“She’s a fake.”

Kayli frowned. She knew how much Kyle cared about having a queen. But now that there was a queen, he was claiming that she was a fake. Did he really want a queen or not?

“Shouldn’t you be glad that there is a queen in the first place?”

“But she’s not real.”

“What’s wrong with the fake? I mean, do you know where the real one is? Because if you pulled the fake one out, there would be no queen again...”

“There’s nothing wrong with the fake other than that she’s an imposter. And I do in fact know where the real queen is.”

“Really?” Kayli looked surprise. He really found the really queen? She had disappeared a long time ago. Where would he find her?

“Yup.” He nodded. “This girl next to me is her.”

“What?” She stared at the hooded figure next to Kyle in disbelief. The girl drew back her hood and revealed a young face with bright purple eyes and pale white hair at the roots of her hair. “You... You really are the queen?”

“Well my mother was.” She said with a small smile.

“An- and why are you here now? They said you disappeared along with your mother a while back. A long long time back.”

“It’s a long story.” She said with a shrug. “I could tell you later, but right now we need your help.”

Kayli nodded.

“Are you going to ask me to help you get rid of the fake?”

Kyle nodded as he leaned in.

“We want to get rid of the fake, but not only that, we need to get rid of the person behind all of this. If we don’t get rid of him, who knows what they might do? I don’t want anyone important accidentally getting killed.”

Kayli nodded as she leaned back into her chair, thinking.

“I’ll think about it.” She finally said, thoughts racing through her mind. “I’ll tell you tomorrow. You can stay here. Or come back.”

Kyle coughed awkwardly.

“Well, I need to get check back in on business, but I’m sure Sarah could stay if you want.”

So that’s her name...

“Of course. Do what you need to do.” Kayli said with a smile, getting now even more and more excited by the moment as thoughts flew her head, the possibilities growing and growing. Kyle waved and left them. Kayli called over a nearby person to lead Sarah to a room to settle down. And Kayli retreated back to her room to think.

Thoughts swirled through her mind like a whirlwind and most of them leaned towards yes.

If she agreed to help them, that would be one important ally no easily won. If Sarah becomes queen, considering who Kyle was, the slums was sure to be an ally for the moment. At least until the domes were destroyed. And if they failed, well, hopefully both sides of this clash would weaken and Kayli would be able to step in and take over the slums as well. It was only a matter of order.

She nodded to herself. It would be better to have an ally against the domes first though.

The End
